How to Train your Australian Shepherd Dogs by Understanding its Temperament Qualities?

  • 19/05/2014

Dog is man's best friend. We all know that and probably that is the reason why they are the most preferable option for a pet.

It feels good when, after a long tiring day, you come home and a little cute furry buddy is there to welcome you. According to many scientific studies, only on seeing dogs and cuddling with it, a human body produces lots of serotonin (a happy hormone) that curbs stress. No wonders, dogs are also termed as stress curers.

When they do so much for you, then it becomes your responsibility to take care of their every need well. So, today, let us know how can a person train Australian Shepherd well to ensure that the journey with it remains joyful, memorable and the BEST!

Australian Shepherd – The Breed Information

This is a medium sized dog and is slightly longer than tall. Coat colors can be solid red, black, blue merle, or red merle, with or without copper and white markings. Their eye color varies from brown, blue, amber or other combinations. The loyalty, agility and intelligence are few traits that not only make them a good herder but a great and probably the best family companion. Filled with energy and intelligence, they are dogs that need your every bit of attention, and generally it is said that, this is not a breed for everyone. Surely, if you want a puppy that only lies on a couch all day, then Australian Shepherds are not for you.

Temperament of Australian Shepherds

The herding instinct is so strong that they would want to herd small children and people, something which can be frightening as well. This is because the dog is filled with so much energy that he/she wants a job to do every time, or will create on its own. The created job can be annoying and destructive too but at the end you will be happy to have such a companion. Australian Shepherds are very loyal and good with children. They are initially reserved on seeing strangers, but gel well when told they are also family.

Here comes the Training Part!

When it comes to train them, they are a fantastic breed and excel at all types of training activities and dog sports (seems like you would have a great adventure buddy). The time you will spend at training your little Aussie will be time well spent.

Here is how to train them:

  • Discipline – Your dog must look to you as his owner when little or this can create a trouble later. Train correctly and talk firmly while looking in eyes as the way a mother of dog does. Make sure you do not overdo scolding and harsh behavior.
  • Potty Training – Teach them to poop at the right place by telling them again and again and reward them when they begin doing that so on their own. This will encourage them to be nice to you every time you give a command.
  • Socialization – They are generally one family or person dog and very selective about making outside family friends unless you teach them to do so. So, it is good to expose them to different environment and people. This will help them accept the presence of non threatening people and situations.
  • With Kids – Aussies are very good around children and so both should be taught well what is right to do and what is not. Do not leave both of them unattended. Tell your child to behave well with him and also keep a watch over how your dog behaves and correct him wherever necessary.
  • Keeping your Aussie 'up' – If ignored and left attended for long time, they tend to become destructive. So interact with the dog, play and let him show you his talents at everything.

The breed does require hard work and better training and you might also need to be at your toes all the time, but all the efforts are worth it. Good luck for your search, may you bring one another much love and joy.
