How to Train a Lakeland Terrier Puppy - Using the Right Mindset When Training Your New Terrier!

  • 22/11/2010

Lakeland Terrier's are a wonderful breed and adapt easily to training. This article will help you get into the right mindset to train your Lakeland Terrier puppy!

If you want to be a strong animal trainer, you have to keep one thing in mind. Don't let the dog sense fear or weakness. In the wild, canines are part of social packs, and each pack has an alpha leader. If you want to be successful as a dog trainer, you need to be the alpha leader and make sure the dog knows it. This doesn't mean being cruel, rather it means you have to be who the dog looks for when they need guidance. Once you win their confidence and gain their respect, you will be able to successfully begin training.

Winning their confidence and respect is the first step. Once they have accepted you as the pack leader, you need to continue to interact with the dog in a positive way. You still have to maintain the pack hierarchy and not let the dog feel they are your equal. Through this type of play, you can strengthen the roles each of you have in the pack, and establish trust. When these things are all in place, training will be fast and relatively easy.

Once you have worked hard to foster the pack hierarchy and the trust and respect of the dog, you can't let yourself lose that position. You need to make sure the lines of what acceptable behavior is and what is not. You can still shower your Lakeland Terrier with affection, it is just important to not let them establish what the boundaries will be. If that happens, you will lose the alpha status, and the dog will become the one in control.

You are actually doing the dog more good than you realize. These limits are of the utmost importance to pack animals. They need to know where their place is in the pack, and what the pack deems acceptable behavior. Your Lakeland Terrier wants this leadership. It is biologically programmed into him or her. These roles are clearly defined and are absolutely the key to pack survival. By providing the leadership, you will be able to guide your dog to understand what is acceptable and what is not.

Good luck training your new Lakeland Terrier puppy!
