The Basset Hound is a superb breed possessing magical sense of smell backed by 220 million smell receptors as compared to 5 million for humans. The smell receptors in the Basset hound are capable of sensing smells simultaneously and tracking one smell religiously for long distances. In fact, this breed is short and perfect for hunting hares and rabbits supported by its strong legs, large paws and long floppy ears that help send smells to its face.

How to train a Basset hound

The Basset hound is not only a very intelligent dog but also a stubborn one. To overcome the stubbornness you have to start training the dog almost from its birth. This would help you in the long run to ensure the dog is obedient and loyal to you.

You can follow the steps outlined below to train your dog:

1. Confine to small area

In the early stages of its life, confine the dog to a small area so that you can observe the time periods to determine patterns for its hunger, sleep and ablutions. You could also use a crate.

2. Potty train outside

You can take the puppy outside every half hour to establish some sort of routine for potty training. Each time the puppy does its potty thing outside reward it suitably to reinforce the habit. The going outside habit should be reinforced even after playtime, naps and meals.

3. Establish a routine

This is the time to begin establishing a routine for waking, sleeping, eating, bathing and playing. This is also the time to familiarize the puppy to the local environment within the home and outside. Your puppy will like the routine and stick to it.

4. Social exposure

In the first 18-20 weeks, begin the process of socializing the dog. You can expose the dog to different environments – sunny, windy, rainy and cloudy – to acclimatize it. You can also start taking the dog out to parks where it can see for itself other humans and other animals including other dogs. Try to expose the dog to different kinds of people – boys and girls and men and women.

5. Prevent dog bites

Social exposure is a crucial part of the training as it can make your dog a real social being. This can ensure that your dog will not bite any visitor to your home as it grows old in your home. If you slip up here, your dog could harm you later in life by becoming aggressive and bite a visitor prompting the victim to file a suit. Rosenfeld Injury lawyers, who specialize in dog bite cases, state that these lawsuits can end up costing huge sums of money. You are not immune from liability if your dog caused a bite.

Remember also that you have to give anti rabies vaccine to prevent rabies infection if the dog bites anyone inadvertently or otherwise. Make it a point to take the puppy to the vet periodically.

6. Grooming and exercise

You should make it a point to exercise your dog because the Basset hound is a lazy and stubborn dog. It is also big-pawed and it requires exercise to keep it fit. You can also benefit when you exercise the dog. You need to clean the dog more because it is low strung and it contracts a lot of dirt on its skin and paws. Further, the nails in its paws grow fast and they need constant grooming.

The Basset hound is a great dog to have at home. Though stubborn, the dog when trained early and well can give you years of happy moments for you and your family.
