what do you find to be the best brand of dry food? do any of you feed pedigree chum? or have you had any bad experiences with a supposed high quality brand such as eukanuba, iams, royal canin etc?

To be honest pedigree chum is not a very good food, its full of artificial colours, flavourings and addictives. It does not have a high meat content and over all wouldnt be a good food to feed.
I feed a fish based complete food called Kronch, there are a wide rang of high quality brands you can get, mostly in pet shops or vets, like Jameswellbeloved, Redmills, Hills, Burns etc, which are a lot better quality than any supermarket brand.
I have never had any problem with the food my dog is on, its a complete food with all the right minerals, oils etc and he does very well on it.
Some dogs do well on different feed and not all types suit every dog so it can trial and error to see which one suits each dog.
There is no best dog food as such, just the one that suits your dog best and the best quality you can afford to feed, not everyone can afford the higher priced ones but there are all different price ranges, but the highest price one isnt necessarily the best one. I find Rpyal Canin way too over priced for what it is.

I have two of them on James Wellbeloved, and the other two on Orijen. Found them both to be excellent foods, the dogs do very well on them, bit pricey but definately worth it. Like Andrea said, Pedigree wouldn't be the best food, one of the worst infact, IMO. |

I have tried pedigree and I found that my dog was incredibly hyperactive when on it, I then changed over to royal canin and I don't know if it was coincidence or what but he calmed down an awful lot.
I found royal canin to be very expensive so hes now on his first bag of red mills. I havent noticed any real difference in him on red mills except that he doesnt seem to like it very much, so I bought a bag of james wellbeloved after hearing good reviews about it. Its actually a good bit cheaper than royal canin, and I got a sample pack of it last week which he ate in one go. I havent started him on it yet but if he likes it il hopefully stick to it, even though it means travelling from sligo to longford to get it!!

My lot are on Orijen in the morning and BARF in the evening, with carrots as treats a couple of times a week. Neala is the only one of the four who likes bananas so she gets half of mine when I make a nana sandwich

auldgen grange. Its costs me €55 for a 15kg which lasts me about a month for three medium sized dogs. That works out about €18 a month which I think is excellent value. I occasionally add some mackrel or tuna in oil but they eat it up regardless. Oh - I also get it delivered for that .

Massbrook Beefy crunch and Massbrook trainer. Oil and a little bit of canned to encourage them to eat more if they need to. Raw lumps of bones from butcher. Mine are thriving.

Hi there,
I know you question said '' what do you find to be the best brand of dry food? '' but I have my girl Juno (dogue de bordeaux) on RMB (Raw Meaty Bones) diet. After months of research and weighing up pro's and con's I made the switch from dry kibble to RMB. I did have her on dry kibble for a few months, but the RMB diet has done wonders for her coat, teeth, energy levels and very importantly her poos are small and dry. Her body absorbs so much more from the RMB that her waste is greatly reduced. She gets no processed, cooked food or veg.
I do give her the odd carrot to chew and sometimes an over ripe bananna......but she would actually eat anything if given to her
I know this diet is not for everyone but I would reccomend it whole heartedly.
It costs me less to feed my 47kg (still growing) dog on RMB when compared to the average premium dry feed. After calling into butchers and looking for local (and not so local) meat processing plants I now pay less than €40 per month !
Best of luck with your dog

i know pedigree chum is a very low quality food, but would be interested to hear of any dogs it has affected, in a good or bad way. for example, my aunt loves and takes great care of her westie and feeds him pedigree chum and he is a very happy and healthy dog. i would be very wary in feeding that to my pet, i plan to start my pug on royal canin mini junior with some oils mixed in to help his coat.

I used to feed my dogs pedigree chum until one of them got very sick and I started to look into food and was quite shocked at what I was reading about the artificial flavourings etc...one of the vets I used to go to described it as similar to us eating mcdonalds all the time..don't know if that is fair or true but I changed them to Hills Science Plan and I have noticed such a difference in my dog now...his coat is shinier and healthier, his breath doesn't smell and he is overall in much better form.
To be honest I don't even know if it is that much more expensive as he doesn't eat as much of it as he would have done the pedigree chum so I reckon it works out only a little bit more expensive but in my opinion worth every penny.
I think as the others have said any of the good quality food is the same and it really just depends on what works for your dog...
My sister fed her dog the Royal canin junior and he is thriving on it.

Hi Floriavole,
I had Fionn on Pedigree for a good while, nearly a year and he was a happy dog, not a bother on him BUT I decided to change to Husse as it sounded better and it was easier for me since they deliver directly at home, the difference I found was no more farts (they smell awful!!) his coat improved amazingly, people was stopping me on our walks to praise it, he's eyes are much brighter and overall he seems to be in better health... I didn't think Pedigree was bad until I saw the change! Now we have them on Orijen it's supposed to be one of the best dry foods in the market ATM (as per www.dogfoodanalysis.com) they both love it , lick their bowls for ages! and their coats etc are looking great as well, even the vet asked me what are they on! on the bad side for this food is that it comes from Canada and deliveries can be a bit unpredictable... (I've had to wait a full week to get it this time...) Hope this helps! |

Hi elly
my dogs have raw meaty bones diet mainly, as i didnt like what i read about proprietary dog food. Fact, all dogs will end up with tooth decay at a young age if not given natural products to clean their teeth, who gets the money for cleaning, vets!!!who suggests science plan dog food for puppies at sixty for euro a sack, vets, they're on commission for each bag sold. Dogs are meant to gnaw and crunch, if you had a dog like mine where the food doesnt even touch the sides, dried food would not clean her teeth. there are no hard and fast rules but the more natural the diet the healthier your dog will be. My dogs have lovely white teeth, glossy coats and have never had anything wrong with them. the only time they go to the vets is for vaccinations. it does work out cheaper, you just have to invest a little time researching sources for your fresh dog food.( no offal) and taking a little time to prepare the fruit and veg if you work. best bit is that your dog doesnt go to the loo as much because they are utilising the diet in the right way, like nature intended.

Loki has Select Gold, she does great on it, her general coat condition etc improved loads since being on it, I've had no problems and so see no need to switch! i make home made liver truffles for her lol! very poncy but very cute. these are a very occasional treat, they really stuff up my blender, so if i ever meet any of you, think twice before i offer you a smoothie lol! she gets the odd bit of raw carrot and brown rice thrown in if shes lucky but no often.

no PC fed Royal Canin breed specific for shih. going to revisit food for malti tear staining is driving me crazy just plucked the inner ear and boy eugh.. so maybe this will help her have angel eyes but havent used it at all.gave her denta stix fot teething and raw hide so that made it even worse. May try barf for her. chicken fish and bit of red meat with the veggies and eggs. maybe this will stop the tearing as well as botteled water here is hoping!! have to read up more on barf though. only ever gave mine a bit of mince and chicken previously.

LB,
I belive Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) helps reduce tear stains.
I have used it to help with dry skin on my dogue, must buy another bottle as it also goes nicely on chips
I added it to Juno's evening meal but have read that you can add it to the dogs water.
It is supposed to help with dogs coat, skin, digestive, uniary systems and some belive it can ease joint pain in arthritic dogs !
Google ACV tear stains.
Buying a bottle might be a cheaper option to Angle Eyes and benefit your dog in other ways !

I have Rocki on select gold, at first he didn't really like it but i was given a little tip of heating it up and i have to say i dont think the food ever hits the bottom of his bowl lol, his coat is great as is his teeth and breath, i have also put the cats on it as they had just being getting whiskas food pouches and a cheap brand dry food and now with the select gold they have stopped shedding and all have good glossy coats

Hey..
Is anybody here feeding their buddies BARF? I was feeding my Merfy(Japanese Chin) BARF, but my vet recommend and advised me to switch to kibble, dry ones specifically. Can anyone give me simple steps on how to shift the routine? |

Did your vet say why he or she wanted you to change to kibble was there somthing missing from your diet or is it just another vet that does not like barf feeding???

Don't know why..
Sorry to say this but I felt a little of a money collector about him. (Sorry for the word) It's just that he's insisting that i should go kibble and buy some products at a store near the clinic. It's just a feeling but since He's a vet I still trust at his word, a bit. |
