Hi there,

I have a one year old cross bread, Bichon x Cavalier. She is a good tempered dog, socialises with other dogs, people and children very well.

I've noticed recently when I leave for work in the morning she starts to shake or shudder as if she is nervous and my heart goes out to her. I work locally so come home at lunchtime most days so she's only on her own for a couple of hours. She's gets lots of attention and walks and she's plenty of toys to keep her amused while I'm not there. It literally starts when she sees me going towards the door or putting on my coat. When I come back at lunchtime there's usually not a bother on her, she's usually gnawing on a bone or playing with something or just waking up from sleeping.

Do you think this is separation anxiety? Any advice on what to do?

Tks a mil

She's probably playing up on your anxiety of leaving her!!!  If it was separation anxiety on her part i would safely say that she would have your house wrecked by the time you got back, she's be chewing on all sorts and scraping at doors.  when you leave in the mornings, give her a treat in her bed, pat on the head and just walk away, don't fuss or have a long good bye... like ripping off a plaster, quick and painless LOL

Another option is to maybe leave a radio on so that there is some noise happening for her or get a treat ball so that she's amused for a while... i don't think you have anything to worry about tho

Thanks for the tips and you're probably right, i do feel awful guilty leaving her and she probably picks up on it.... how sad am I ?!!?

Just to comment on what you're saying about biting things, she does tend to have a go at the skirting boards now and then. Somebody told me to put olive oil and pepper on them but never did this yet. Is that okay to do?

Think I'll dig out her Kong at the weekend and that should keep her amused!!!!

hi newbie. Just a quick message about the olive oil and pepper. It's fine to use. i wanted to keep my dog away from a tree in our garden so i sprinkled pepper around it and he hasn't gone near it since. It's just that they don't like the taste or smell of it.

I wish our lot didn't "like"Pinch these things ... our last bitch (Lindy-Lou, now two) loved all of the above, and we have no skirting board corners anywhere in the house!!!

Best thing to spray on wood is tea tree oil or old cheap perfume.....dogs hate it. I know that some ppl advise food stuffs like chilli oil, mustard etc but any of the hungry breeds will just eat it anyway!!! Tea tree oil is the best but not for materials only wood and plastic!!!
