Hi, I have a 9 week old Samoyed/Springer cross who won't stop weeing in her bed. She's been living with us for a week and is my first dog. Her first night here I had her in a dogbed in my room and she weed in it, didn't worry too much about it and did a bit research in to crate training. I'm home pretty much all day except for doing the school run in the mornings and at noon so knew she wouldn't be left there for too long. I had a playpen belonging to my daughter when she was a baby (not one of the travel cot ones but http://agreenliving.org/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/07e2e9d2a6baby-playpen.jpg) so I used 4 panels to make a small area and halved it then with another panel, was just big enough for her to turn around and lie down.I added her bedding and she was fine in here for a couple of days. Wasn't happy being left in there alone, cried every time I left the room but I've been trying to ignore her crying as the longest she's left in there is half an hour and she just needs to get used to being alone a bit more.
Anyway yesterday she started weeing in her crate. First at night (I've been getting up every 2 hours to bring her outside) then in the morning while I was bringing my daughter to school, was gone for 20 minutes max, I had brought her outside just before I left as well. She did it again later on in the day. She was never left in there for very long and was never left a long time without going to the toilet. So I did some more research and figured if she's weeing in her bed anyway I may as well give her more space so she can wee on the floor in a pinch and save her dwindling set of clean blankets! So I made the play pen bigger with 2 panels side by side on each side the wall fills out the back of it) she has plenty of room for her bed, training pad, food and toys but yet, she was in there for a few minutes today and she weed on the floor, and then this evening around 7.15 i brought her outside. put her in the playpen then while I got my daughter to bed and had a shower. She barked for a good 15 minutes and at around 8.05 I went to leave her out of the playpen and she was after weeing twice in the bed and once on the floor. Now, if she was out of the pen and running around the kitchen she'd never wee that much. She's gone 2 hours during the day without needing to go. I know there's going to be plenty of accidents, but I bring her outside every hour, praise her loads when she gets it right, when she's out and about in the house we have very little accidents, most of the accidents seem to be happening in her bed! I expected her to week on the floor or on the training pad when I put her in the playpen but why is she weeing in her bed? Is there anything i can do to stop it? She's being sleeping in her crate in my room up to now but with the playpen now set up she's going to have to sleep there as I don't want her weeing all over my bedroom floor! (i'm expecting a lot of barking and crying tonight!) Also expecting to waking up to a very soggy dogbed. Is there anything I can do to stop this? If she keeps going she's not going to have a clean place to sleep come morning and is going to have to sleep on the floor! PS. Sorry for the long post, figured I may as well put in all the info I can give rather than leaving things out!

Woke up this morning to a dry floor. (i decided seems she had the playpen i'll get a full nights sleep as i'm just getting tirder and crankier every night. There was a lot of barking when I first put her to bed and woke up a couple of times to her crying. So much for the full nights sleep! That and my little one was coughing half the night. So anyway, i got up this morning and the floor and training pad were dry but lo and behold she had lifted the blankets and weed under them! So now she literally has no beddig to sleep on and I am not giving her one of my blankets to wee all over! At my wits end here with it, please help!

Ok this may be not be much help but it may be worth a try. Firstly what are cleaning up the area where your pup toilets on with? Dont use any cleaning products that contain bleach as bleach smells to a dog like urine so will only encourage it to go again in that area. use a non biological product instead.
Secondly, if the pup is weeing on nice soft fabrics I would substitute them for something else. What about putting a carbord box that she can get in and out of and just putting lots of shredded paper in.
Also leave a radio on low in room where the pup is at night it may help to to sleep better if she thinks she has company.
Dont panic you seem to be doing all the rights things and your pup will eventually "get it" and become easier to manage.
Im sure others will give better advice. We are a bit quiet on this forum at the mo - think we have all gone into hibernation mode with the dark weather :)

Thanks for the reply Bartlett
. Every time she's wee'd in the bed it has been a different blanket, with all the rain I havn't been able to get them dry so she was lying on a tiny fitted cot sheet all day. They're all my little ones old baby blankets and were stored away for the last year or so but would have been washed in non-bio before storage. After I wrote that second message this morning things go so much worse. I couldn't leave the room for a second without her going nuts! Barking, crying, howling. clawing and biting at the playpen. ended up bringing her around the house on a leash with me while I got my little one ready for playschool. And then the weather tried up and I left her outside. Decided to leave her there while I brought my little one to school. (Was gone for a max of 20 minutes) There wasn't a peep out of her when I was leaving or when I got back! I left the back door open for the day and I could swear it was like a different puppy! Saw the happy energetic loving puppy that we had in the days running up to all that horrible rain! She couldn't give a hoot where I was all day while she out playing in the back and running around. And she came into the playpen for naps and wasn't bothered when she saw me close the gate or when she woke up to it closed and the kitchen door closed. Couldn't get over the change. She hasn't had a chance to wee in her bed yet as I've only just put it back in. I've wrapped the blanket completely around it so I think she'll have to get out of the bed anyway to take it off and wee under it. Am going to get up every 2 hours again tonight to bring her outside (last night was the only night I didn't do it and simply because I was so exhausted I couldn't even think of doing it!) So I guess the main problem was her not getting outside. Now she won't have all her all her shots until Monday so I can't bring her for walks to tire her out a bit (don't mind bringing her for walks in the rain, am in the process of buying rain gear for both me and the little one) but for a pup of her energy I know that a 10 minute walk isn't going to cut it. I do several 5 minute training sessions every day and give her plenty of freetime to play around in the kitchen or the living room. I don't really know of any games I can play with her, I've been avoiding tug-of-war and games like that as I've heard they can make a pooch more likely to bite- one thing I definitely do not want with a 3 year old child in the house! So are there any games/activities we can do inside the house on really horrible days to wear her out? My house isn't really that big, it's a modest sized 3 bed bungalow. It's the back garden that is nice and big for playing and running around. We've only really worked on "sit", "down" and leash training so not really many games I can think of to play with her indoors. She got "sit" in no time and does it now everytime I say it unless she's really distracted. Not doing so well with "down" so didn't think it would be a good idea to move onto anything else until she gets it. Anyone have any ideas?

Can't help much with the puppy house training, you seem to be doing everything right, some pups just take longer than others. As regards the barking and whining when you leave the room I'm afraid your just going to have to wait it out, going back in to comfort her or tell her to be quiet is just rewarding her with attention, tough work and I'm sure it doesn't help having a 3 year old in the house! She's only a 9 week old pup and if you think about it really it's quite a shock to them to leave their mother and littermates, leaving a radio on low, putting a snuggle safe heatpad (avoid hot water bottles just in case they chew and burst it) to stimulate the litters heat and leaving a ticking clock wrapped in a blanket to stimulate the mothers heartbeat can help calm them a little.
I'v read that too about avoiding tug of war due to the whole dominance thing, personally I think it's a load of codswollop. I play tug with my dog but I have just incorporated a few rules into it, he's not allowed grab the rope until I say so and he lets go if I say so. Not because I believe all that old fashioned dominance stuff but just because it incorporates a little training and thinking into the game.
No harm to move onto new things without getting down. Loads more simple things you can teach like give paw, sit and stay, leave it. You can work on lead training around the house and garden too. Never tried it myself but hide and seek with some toys or treats around the house!
As regards to walking be careful not to over exercise her, over exercising, especially on hard ground when their too young can damage growing joints. 5 minutes per month of age is the rule of thumb.

And we're back to weeing in the bed! Anytime she was left alone yesterday she did it again. Yet again down to having no bedding and she's not going to have any tonight cos I'm not going to get them dry with the weather! She woke up a couple of times last night crying, brought her outside, she didn't do anything but when I got up this morning she was after weeing in the bed twice and there was a wee on the training pad. It's like she thinks that's the place to go toilet yet when I have her in the sitting room and she has to go she goes and sits by the door to let me know she has to go outside.
She got plenty of exercise yesterday both inside and outside, so that's not the reason. She is definitely starting to hold it more during the day but come the night she just doesn't even bother. Don't know what to do. I'm so tired and fed of washing blankets that I'm starting to lose my cool with her now when she does something she shouldn't. She knows I'm in a humour this morning and is avoiding me and spending most of her time with my little one. She's a big pup so really thought she'd be able to hold it for a couple of hours at least at night. She's also doing it when I leave the house for a while. Was gone for about 2 hours yesterday, she was definitely empty when I left but again, there was a wee underneath part of her blanket. I've seen her hold it for a lot longer than 2 hours when I'm home. Nearly thinking of getting a crate with no bedding at all to stop her weeing on it but is that just cruel? She doesn't even like sitting on the floor without something under her. Just don't know what to do with her! I have been a bit lazy with getting up to let her out but have been getting up once or twice between 10.30 and 6.30. Really don't think I have the energy to get up every 2 hours again! Someone please help!

Why do you think a big pup can hold wee longer than a small one ? Does a big baby need it's nappy changing less than a small one ? Come on, this little pup is a baby - give it a break ! Why are you expecting so much of it so soon ? It is picking up your distressed vibes ! Puppies - like babies - equals mess ! That's what you took on. Better get used to it or give it back ! It will chew as well. Do you think you are really cut out to have a puppy ? |
