Hi All,
just stumbled on to this website and must say it has lots of great info! I am looking to get a Shih Tzu puppy for my wife as a birthday present. Her birthday is in March. Any idea who I can contact about this or where I could find a puppy that will be ready in March? Thanks for your help, Jason |

Stay away from donedeal, gumtree, ad papers (the dealer) etc. They are full of puppy farmers and people just breeding dogs for sake of it and shih tzu's like most small dogs are particularly common in puppy farms because of the cute factor.
I'm not sure what health tests shih tzu's should have prior to breeding but every breed generally has a list of health problems they are prone to, the parents should be tested for these problems before even thinking of breeding, otherwise they run the risk of passing it onto the pups where it ends in an empty wallet and a broken heart. They should also generally should do well in the showring (ikc shows not country shows), there is a common misbelief that ikc papers and shown parents don't matter if the pup isin't be be shown but it's the very least I would expect on top of good health test results.
If a suitable pup isin't available for March please don't rush things and buy one from donedeal, I don't think you want it to end in heartbreak!
I would contact the shih tzu club of Ireland who may be able to point you in the direction of a good breeder,

Also to add, does your wife like dogs? Have you talked about getting a dog already? Please dont get a dog if you havent already discussed this with your wife and she is all on board for getting a dog, as a new puppy can severly disrupt the household so unless you are both in on it and are happy to bring a puppy into your home, please do not get one as a surprise.
