On sunday evening, we lost our dear friend of 15 years, Jasper. He was an old man, but still it happened so suddenly that we are all in such shock.

Jasper came into our lives, as an 8 week old little white bundle of fluff nearly 15 years ago, (after weeks and weeks of my sister brother and I begging our parents to let us get a dog!) To this day I believe my Mam and Dad thought we would grow tired of taking care of him, and he would be rehomed before long, but he just fit so perfectly with our family.
We were never really a family of animal lovers, over the years we have tried to get other dogs to keep Jasper company, but it never really seemed to work out. It was like Jasper and only Jasper was meant for us.

I was 10 when he came into our lives.  My brother was 9 and my sister 13. We have grown up with him here.
My father passed away, I got married, had a baby, and got divorced, My sister got married and had a baby of her own, and Jasper was there with us through it all. He went from being my childhood pet, to being my daughters beloved friend.  His death is the end of an era in our lives, and it has left us all heart broken.

He got sick on Saturday night, we brought him to the vet on Sunday morning. The vet said that he had fluid in his lungs, gave us a bag of medicine  and told us to bring him back on Tuesday.
He passsed away in my brothers arms that Sunday afternoon.

I am so overwhelmed with sadness. Its like losing a family member. There are no outlets for this kind of grief. I dont think I will ever get over him.

Saphairerain... what a heartwarming story!  We, on irishdogs, know exactly what its like to loose a pet, i can personally say i found it worse than loosing a human family member!  Dogs are such big parts in our lives and sometimes we don't realise how big until they are gone!  I know its a cliche but it will get easier in time, please feel free to post pictures of the wonderful jasper and share stories with us... when you feel you can!

RIP Jasper, you were very muched loved by the sounds of things! Run free and happily at the bridge, your in great company up there!!!

Thinking of you at this hard time saphairerain!

As has been expressed here already ... what a sad time for you and you will always have those wonderful moments in your memory with you forever. But, Jasper has gone to the Rainbow Bridge where he is running freely with all his other pack members.

Thank you all so much for your support. Its so good to know that there are others out there who know how we feel, and know, just how much a family can love their dog.

Its been a few days since Jasper's passing, and while we are still very sad, we are starting to talk about ways to remember him, and to make a tribute to the effect he had on our lives.
I have decided to buy a new bench for our garden, and have a plaque engraved in his memory made.
Its only the beginning of our life without him, so its hard to say if we will ever find another dog for our family, but at the moment I feel that he will be our one and only.  If ever anyone hears of a Pekingese needing to be rehomed however, please contact me! Never say never right?

We arranged to have him cremated, and to have his ashes returned to us in a small sealed box with his name engraved on it. We think we might place this on our living room window, as he liked to sit on the arm chair and look out at the neighbourhood.

Such a loss this has been. Like the loss of any family member, it has left a hole in my heart that will never be filled.

But as you have all told me, He is at Rainbow Bridge now.

I better leave it at that because I'm starting to cry again!
To anyone who reads this, take a moment to give your dog a little love, a cuddle, a belly rub, or just a little scratch on the head, just for me.

Thanks guys.
Gillian.

What a gorgeous dog... im so sorry for your loss. i know its of little comfort to you now, but when you look back over his time here, you can be happy in the knowledge that he had the best possible life with a family like yours who obviously cared for him very much and he passed on to the bridge in such a lovely peaceful way, in the arms and home of people who loved him. he was a true beauty. the grief is very real, so take your time, and be easy with yourself.x
