Hi guys
My mam has contacted a person selling newfy X st. bernard puppies (dads newfy and mam's saint) We are going to see them on sunday to check them out, so far they sound like genuine ppl and we have gotten pic messages of the parents and pups who look to be very well looked after and are indoors! That aside, do you think it would be ok to ask for a copy of the parents IKC papers.... assuming they are registered that is! Just as a precaution or a contact point should anything happen with the pup should my mam decide to take one on?

Anyone who's genuine enough would be more than happy to provide ALL the papers and stuff that you would like ... it's the people who cry away or who are "going to send it in post" that are the one's who you should be weary of! You know yourself ... go with your gut feeling of meeting people when they're selling a puppy ... |

You could ask but dont see what the point is really of getting papers when the dog is a cross bred anyway as the papers arent worth anything if you get me?
Can i ask how come they are going for a cross and i hope they arent charging too much for them, you know how much we try to steer people away from buying cross breeds like this on these forums...

Whats the problem with cross breeds? I know about puppy farmers making a killing on "designer dogs" but not all cross breeds are like that.

Suzyq ....I think thats kind of the point ....plus they can inherit both breed specific issues as well so its hard to justify cross breeding on purpose. not enough is known about genitics to be able to selectively breed dogs IMO,,,it helps testing but testing is not fool proof

Theres nothing wrong with cross breeds at all, but its the people intentionally crossing dogs to make money and charging a fortune for them that i have a problem with. If its an accidental mating well thats different, but ive no time for people who cross 2 different breeds on purpose, plus its against the IKC rules to do so too.

Look i do know all the arguments to be had about the subject but what is wrong with someone picking a cross breed rather than a pure breed? Ovbiously Peppers parents have picked this dog for certain reasons and shouldnt be questioned why. I picked Poppy and have not been critisized to my face but I have heard of a few raised eyebrows on the matter.
Pepper I think if either of the dogs have papers you could take a copy even just for a matter of interest if nothing else. What harm would it do? Im sure you above most know that you dont need them for other reasons. Good luck to your family in getting their new Dog and I hope they enjoy their new addition as much as we are enjoying ours.

Suzy, theres absolutely nothing wrong with choosing a cross bred at all and thats not what im talking about. Im looking at the situation as the breeder, not the buyer.
I dont agree with intentionally crossing 2 breeds of of dogs at all and as i said, if its an accidental mating then thats a different matter. I just have a problem with people who intentionally cross 2 breeds of dogs and then charge for them.
Cross breeds are fab and we had one growing up so i have no problem with them, its the breeders that are doing this for the wrong reasons, thats all.

my parents didn't specifically didn't go out looking for a newfy X saint, the like both dogs separately and they have been looking for a while for a new big dog for a companion to their pyr after their other pyr died last year, but those that are in rescues weren't really suitable coz they are looking for a female and alot of dogs that they liked were male, unneutered or needed to be an only dog or weren't suitable to be around kids, as my mam looks after my nieces and nephews. My mam just happen to see the ad in the paper and asked me what i thought and i just simply said it couldnt' hurt to enquire, which she did. Nothing is set in stone, they are going this weekend to see them and i'm going with them to ask questions and if i get the slighest sniff that they are purposely breeding these pups then i'll tell my parents not to buy, obviously i hate the fact that there are ppl out there breeding "designer breeds" for money but i've a suspicion that this was an accidental mating and they are not asking for a whole lot for the puppies either... so i'll know more after this weekend. The sellers did ask my mam did she realise that the pup was going to be a large breed and asked what she wanted the dog for so they seem to the pups interests close to heart. On the papers thing i was just wondering about asking for a copy of them in case my parents take on the pup and it develops health issues that it might be some sort of help that they have some one to contact with history to the lineage, plus i think it would be interesting to see where the dogs came from! Both mum and dad look to be happy healthy dogs and there are only 4 pups in the litter. We'll know more in time eh...

Ah that sounds good Nadine and you are well experienced to suss out good and bad breeders now so you shouldnt have a problem at all.
Sounds like the breeders are ok when they mentioned that about them being big dogs.
There should be no reason not to ask for the papers and not to be given them either. If they are registered then why not?

went to see the puppies today, OMG they are adorable soooo laid back. Mum and dad were beautiful and really friendly, it was an accidental mating and they have a fab home so all was good. My parents have decided to take the little girl home in a few weeks, can't wait!

i've a few names picked out but she ain't my dog, but will push for them LOL, i'll post pics as soon as we get her, don't like to post the pic we have as its in the persons home and they might not appreciate it if ya get me! So as soon as we get the little lady home i'll share... she's mostly brown, with a little black and two white patches on her face! The others in the litter were mostly white with black patches and one with brown patches... all equally adorable!

Personally, I think it's a great idea for "seniors" to take on puppies and look after dogs, in general. After all, they've probably got more time on their hands to look after them well than most others. Additionally, they get to exercise with their dogs which is always a good thing.
Of course, that's if they can fit the time in between "baby sitting" grandchildren and other extended family youngsters? |

I agree think it is great lease of life for somone. One of the ladies who took one of Suki's pups was after loosing her hubby and was living by herself. (she is neighbour of my folks holiday place) She was so depressed. She loved Suki and put her name down for a baby with me. When they were three weeks old and we went down to let her see them I had a preferance for her, it was a little girl I used to carry her around in my bra while hoovering (LOL) because she was the ikkelest one and there were 7! Well the woman fell in love and that was it she was out buying bits and pieces and asking me by phone what she should and shouldn't do it gave her a totally new outlook on life altogehter I was so happy! I brought the pups down again for a break three weeks later well all her family came over to have a nosey at the expected new addition. I held untill she was 12 weeks cos she was small and she needed the time which suited the woman as well at the time. But I swear to god that woman lives for that little dog she loves her so much and tends to her every need its gas seeing her, Suki hates seeing her babies and has no patience for them at all! The excitement that a new ikkle addition brings to the family is great. I can't wait to see pics of this new baby ....a big slobber monster :) Get pics of the other woofer too pleeeaseee!
