I feel I should explain.....Nothing 'happened' to Budgie- I had her pts.
When LB (and my fosterer who took her overnight) told me about the scarring on her face we reckoned that she was most likely used as bait. I only wish she was used as bait, there would have been some hope for her.... but Budgie was a fighting dog and completely unrehomeable. She'd been trained to kill. If my husband wasn't here with me on Saturday Sitka would be dead now.... it took 2 of us to get her off him- his long hair protected him and she took plenty of it. I think she escaped from her owner.... She'd been fighting recently. Some of the marks on her nose were fresher than others and at the end stage of healing. Her vocal chords were damaged, voicebox was probably crushed, so I called her Budgie cos her voice was birdlike sometimes. And an old fracture in her right hind leg set wrong cos she never got vet attention for the injury. The sides of her face were permanently swollen from scar tissue. She had thick scar tissue on her front legs from the drips her owners put in. She'd been through many many fights. The poor thing was only around 2 yrs old. Even a home with no other dogs wouldn't have worked, cos she'd still have needed to be brought out for exercise. She was brilliant with people, so affectionate and eager to please....but when she clapped eyes on another dog she changed into something else. One small mistake with her like not closing the crate properly, or letting the lead slip through your hand...and the closest animal to her would have ended up dead. I agonised on the decision to let her go- she had no future....nobody would take on a dog with her history, and even if someone did, the risk was too great.... I stayed with her and she passed away being petted. R.I.P. Budgie, run free at the bridge xx I'm sorry I couldn't help you. |

Thats a very difficult situation to find yourselves in but you made the right decision. The poor dog. Another victim of stupid people who really haven't an ounce of humanity. I hope sitka is ok and none the worse after his ordeal. I've never seen a dog with that much scarring. Her life was so hard.

This is so sad. At least you tried to give her a normal happy life Socket. It shows just how forgiving of humans dogs are that they respond so well to human love despite what theyd been through. Ive seen it with poor greyhounds too - treated terribly yet so receptive to someone who genuinely wants to care. I hope your other dog is recovering OK.

Yet again, the poor dog suffers because of the idiot humans. Poor girl, but unfortunately the right decision turns out to be the hardest one. It is so unfair that she only got to have a short life, but better that she slipped away peacefully than that she killed another dog and possibly got shot and died slowly.
Awful decision to have to make, but a dog being pts isn't the worst thing that can happen to it.
Hope Sitka is okay.

So sorry Shirley. You took a hard but right decision:it was right for the dog - that it wasnt left to die a miserable death, it was right for the other dog it may have attacked and a person who may have intervenedand finally,it was right for the breed. This breed gets enought bad press and if poor Budgie had attacked it would have added fuel to the fire. Hope bad things happen to the person who made the dog this way.

Socket. What a difficult decision for you to have to take. One of ours is part staffie and he is the most playful dog that i have ever had, just wants to give licks and be loved. Terrible to have to make that decision but at least she crossed tehe bridge to meet up with some old palls and i am sure she will be looking i on you with thanks for the kindness you showed her. Unfortunately there are so many absolutely stupid people who do not understand this breed at all and because of so many idiots out there the breed is black listed and termed vicious. I believe that it is not the breed that is visious but it is the so called owners. The dogs are just doing what they are trained to do and trying to please their owners. At least she got a taste of what genuine love and affection is like
