English Springer Spaniel: Facts You Must Know Before Adopting English Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is a medium-sized breed that belongs to one of the gun dogs. They are sporting breeds that were originally bred to retrieve animals such as birds. A compactly built breed, the males typically weigh 45-55 pounds, while 40-50 pounds for females; and stands 19-21 inches tall for males, and 18-20 inches for females.

Coat

The English Springer Spaniel is a double-coated breed with medium, wavy or flat, sometimes even curly topcoat and short, soft and dense undercoat. Feathering can be seen on the chest, legs, belly, and ears. Their coat colors are red, orange, lemon, or sable.

Activity

The English Springer Spaniel requires a great deal of exercise to keep them content. They should be given as much exercise as possible. They should be walked daily, or jog alongside the owner every day. These dogs love to retrieve and swim, and are competent in both obedience competitions and agility skills trials.

Temperament

The English Springer Spaniel is active, faithful, and intelligent. They normally get along well with other pets and older kids. These spaniels are great at working, and are fun, enthusiastic and eager. They love to be around their families, and enjoy exercising. They are bouncy, friendly and outgoing, yet can be foolhardy. Affectionate and pleasant, this breed is the ideal gundog, and is reliable and extremely loyal.

Overview

The English Springer Spaniel is a breed that is considered the founding ancestor of Spaniels. This is among of the largest Spaniel breeds, and was relatively popular during Renaissance period for being ideal companions for European hunters. There are two types of the English Springer Spaniel, those bred for conformation ring (the Bench Bred), and those bred for field trials and/or hunting (the Field Bred).

Care

Their double coats are relatively easy to groom. Regular brushing with firm bristle brush keeps it neat. The Bench Bred requires more attention, though. Both varieties require dry shampooing and bathing only when absolutely necessary and should regularly check the ears for any signs of infection.

Training

The English Springer Spaniel is very intelligent, obedient and skillful breed. Due to these traits, they are easy to train. They have the attentiveness and watchfulness that make them the ideal performance dog, family pet and hunting companion. As they are emotional dogs, they tend to get hurt easily. So, training should be done with positive approach as forceful training leads to a dog that is uneager to please. Due to their intelligence, they require mental stimulation. An English Springer Spaniel that is untrained will become bored, eventually looking for other ways to amuse themselves including obsessive, very energetic, and destructive behavior.

Character

English Springer Spaniels are excellent in hunting on land and water, yet remains to be an ideal family pet. They are medium-sized compact breed that is extremely athletic. They have a kind, alert, and trusting expression. A sturdy and hardy breed, they are known to be more powerful and quicker than all of the other Spaniels.
