Do Bull Terriers Make Good Pets?
- 13/11/2015
Finding the perfect dog for your family can be an exhausting process, and it takes a lot of research to make sure you're getting the perfect fit. Bull terriers are strong and energetic dogs who sometimes get what is usually an unfair reputation from general media. However, these often loyal and friendly dogs aren't going to be right for everyone. Read on to learn more about bull terriers and whether they are right for you.
Positives About Bull Terriers
As a general rule, most bull terriers are a very friendly breed of dog who not only love their family, but are also known for greeting strangers in a friendly - though often overly energetic, way.
This breed is built to be muscular and strong dogs, and that also comes out in the amount of energy they have displayed. They are very loyal and if you are a high energy and active family, these dogs will be able to keep up with you and even a number of kids, as well.
In other words, there's a lot to love about these smart and active four-legged friends.
Negatives About This Breed
While bull terriers have a lot of positives as a great family pet, this is a species that still needs to have an eye kept on them. While generally great with people, there are a few lines that were bred to be aggressive - and this is an issue if you want a good family dog.
Other major issues mainly revolve around some generally common traits. For one thing, they are very territorial. They generally don't get along living with other dogs of the same gender whether bull terrier or not. Many of them also don't like cats and won't be able to safely co-exist with other pets.
Terriers are also both very active and intelligent. They need to be trained well from a young age, and they need to be constantly engaged. If not, they become extremely mischievous and even a little destructive.
On top of this, terriers will test the dominance of their owner - meaning you have to be able to see these tests and gently put forward your dominance.
Overall Report Card
These dogs can be amazing pets for a small and active family, but they're not going to be right for everyone. When you look at the whole picture, you'll be able to see just how good a fit an active and mischievous bull terrier might be for you.
