Cocker Spaniel - Fundamental Facts You Ought To Know
- 25/03/2013
The Cocker Spaniel (also called the "English Cocker Spaniel" or "American Cocker Spaniel" due to subtle differences in the types) belongs to the sporting dog breed category. They feature wavy ears and a coat that comes in solid and multi-color combinations. It was in the 1300s the breed is thought to have first existed where they were originally bred for hunting different types of birds. They're a popular choice as a companion for active families these days. They are recognizable for their cheerful temperament and love for family life. Their breeding lineage includes the original Spaniels of Spain and they are known to originate from England.
They are categorized as a small to medium sized dog. The recommended male dimensions are 15 inches high and a weight of 24-28 pounds, while the female measurements are 14 inches high with a weight of 24-28 pounds. Their manner is commonly known to be cheerful, affectionate and loyal. They are typically friendly with people they haven't met, and this makes them unsuitable as a protection dog. The breed is confirmed to be highly clever, and scores 18th and 20th (English and American versions respectively) in comparison to every other dog when being trained to understand new instructions.
They're great towards children, and that can make them highly suitable for a family pet. Other pets such as other dogs and cats do get along well with them. Looking after their coat is a fairly demanding task. They need regular brushing once every day or two, and a full-body groom once every 6 to 8 weeks. They can be suited to apartment life, but love having a small yard so they have plenty of room.
They are largely longer-lived, as with the majority of small to medium sized breeds, with an expected life of 10-15 years. Their primary health problem is Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia, and they can also be vulnerable to eye problems, ear infections and skin allergies. They have fun doing things like playing fetch or being included in any family activity. They have a medium to high amount of energy, and that calls for moderate to long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.
You need to be willing to give them plenty of attention and include them in almost any activity if you own the Cocker Spaniel. They are a perfect choice for active owners or families with plenty of time for a dog, but not an ideal option for less active owners with no time for a dog. This breed appeals to quite a few dog owners, and one of the most important reasons is that it can be easily trained and fit into any family due to its intelligent and happy nature.
