Chesapeake Bay Retrievers - Their History and How to Pick a Good One
- 01/11/2010
The origins of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever are a bit murky as some stories suggest it was breed with coon hounds and other stories suggest breeding with English water poodles. Either way, all agree that this dog is an amazing water dog that is perfect for all types of bird game in the North like geese and ducks.
This dog has a number of attributes that make it a great hunting dog in bad conditions. The first one is that it is a smart dog with a great short term memory. This allows it to mark the location of a number of birds at one setting. Another benefit for this dog is that it enjoys the water and really doesn't mind going into cold water. This helps because this is one feature that distinguishes it from the other types of retrievers. The third characteristic for this dog is that it has a thick coat which is perfect for allowing it to handle cold and wet environments. The final characteristic is its stamina. These dogs can run all day allowing them to be fantastic bird dogs. All these benefits also have a strong cumulative effect.
However, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever does have some drawbacks. For example, it is as not as friendly as labs or golden retrievers. They are inclined to fight and are not as affectionate as these other types. For this reason, they are not your best choice as a family pet. Another challenge is that some of these dogs will tend to be hard-mouthed.:For those hunting birds, this is a big negative that will need to be trained out of them.
This dog has an excellent reputation for a bird dog that is unrivaled in cold weather climates. It performs well in field trials making it a popular choice even if it can be aggressive at times.
