Brittany Spaniel - Their History and How to Pick a Good One
- 31/10/2010
The Brittany Spaniel has a long history as well that marks back to medieval times in Spain. It was used to hunt birds even before firearms where it was used in conjunction with hawks or falcons. It would point out and flush the birds and the hawks and falcons would catch the game.
This dog is known as the smallest of the pointing dogs, but still manages amazing speed and endurance for its size. The dogs weight generally runs 35 to 45 pounds which is in contrast to the more standard 55 pound weight of many pointer dogs. They tend to be as fast as other pointers and only have a slightly lesser range. For many hunters, the lesser range will be of benefit to them. The Brittany Spaniel also benefits by having a coat that keeps it well protected in brush. This feature allows it to stay unharmed even where other dogs would be injured. In addition, the dogs coat is normally is white with a range of spots of different colors. This feature allows it to be seen fairly easily in the field like other pointer dogs.
Further, this dog has a strong reputation for being easily trained for both land and water. Its retrieval instincts are excellent and an indication of its breeding past from its Spaniel ancestors.
Their smaller size affords them a distinct advantage over other pointers when it comes to transport. Obviously, it is easier for them to travel and maintain because of the smaller size. Even better is they perform well in close terrain and larger terrain which makes them suited for all kinds of birds from pheasants to quail.
For all these reasons, the Brittany Spaniel makes for a very nice bird dog that many sportsmen would be happy to add into their fold.
