Why Train Your Puppy in a Crate?

  • 18/05/2014

Establish Good Habits

Use of the crate in the Puppy Housebreaking Process is most important. Crate training is the best way to teach your puppy to go to the toilet outside.

Prevent Problem Behaviours

Crating your puppy teaches them to chew only on the toys you provide them. This will prevent the puppy from chewing on other things, such as furniture, shoes, etc.

Safety

When your puppy is in their crate, he/she is safe from any dangerous household items.

Benefits

* The crate becomes your puppy's own area where they will feel secure in and even love it.

* It is key to establishing good habits and preventing destructive ones.

* The crate can reduce the chance of your puppy developing separation anxiety.

* With proper use the crate becomes a place where your dog is calm, out of trouble and accustomed to being alone when you're away.

* The crate is perfect to keep your puppy safely confined when you have visitors.

* Most crates can be moved from room to room so the puppy can be with you most of your day/eve.

* Travelling in the crate is safer and less stressful. As your puppy grows to love their crate trips to the Vet and Dog Groomers can be a better experience.

Helpful Hints

* A private room with a view will give your puppy or dog a quiet, secure place to hangout at home. This is ideal for travelling, as well.

* The crate acts as his/her own personal den where he/she will feel comfort and solitude. You will know he/she is safe and secure, and not doing any type of damage to your home, while you are out running errands.

* Consider Thunderstorms and the fear this presents to most puppies and dogs. The crate presents the sense of security and safety for them during times you cannot be at home to comfort them.

* Puppies/Dogs do not like to soil in their dens. The crate is great for training them to go outdoors. It spares damage to your carpet and floors too!

* While your puppy or dog learns others rules, the crate will limit access to the rest of your home.

* Your puppy or dog may come to fear the crate if used as punishment.

Choosing A Crate

Crates are available in different sizes and types. For a puppy you should choose a crate according to the size he/she will become as an adult. The crate size for a full grown dog should be large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around in. To prevent a puppy from soiling at one end of the crate, then staying on the other end, you can block off the excess space in the crate.

Crate Types:

Wicker Crates

Wire Crates

Airline Crates; aluminum and plastic

Soft-sided Crates/Carriers
