The Surefire Way Of Dealing With Pet Hair Odour And Allergies At One Go

  • 05/07/2019

I'm a stay-at-home dad that has to balance between my freelance job, 2 kids and a dog. If I knew my life would end up being such a hectic, I would not have kids (Sorry Jen and Jay, the dog is here to stay). To make matter worst, I'm hyper-allergic to pet dander. On a bad day, I will go on a sneezing frenzy and that is crazily annoying with my every ending "dad" duty.

But life is what it is and I need to make every second count. My Golden is what keeps my sanity in check with my kids constantly screaming back and forth. After some trial and error, I have formulated a simple way to keep pet hair, odor, and allergies down. This is the ultimate solution for busy folks like me that can't spare any of their precious time.

First, let's start with what does not work.

  • Immunotherapy/ Allergy shots - Basically, you are progressively injecting allergens into your body. This "trick" the immune system not to react harshly on any foreign substances. The reason I didn't go for this is as there are many maintenance shots needed in the span of 3-5 years. I don't have the time nor I want to spend my money on this.
  • Medication - A quick fix but not a permanent solution. It will relief you from the swollen and nasal congestion caused by pet allergies. If you continuously expose to the same allergens, you will have to keep popping the pills.
  • Stay outdoor - Doesn't feel right to kick him out just because I can't deal with the allergies.
  • Grooming/ bathing - Again, too time-consuming to do it on a frequent basis. Doing so often trigger my nasal allergies. I rather leave that to the professional.

So what does work?

Is simple. A cordless handheld vacuum cleaner plus an air purifier. I'm not tied to any brand so my answer is based on my personal experience. Let me explain.

Why a cordless, handheld vacuum cleaner?

As opposite to canister vacuum, a handheld is lightweight and much easier to maneuver. Our allergy symptoms are often triggered by pet dander. We all know pet dander can be found in pet hair. A vacuum cleaner will get rids of all the fallen hair, dander and other irritants at one go. You only need to vacuum thoroughly every couple of days or less.

What about air purifier? What's the catch.

The "catch" is any airborne contaminants including odors that float within its range. Pet dander is often spread through airborne and we need to capture it before we inhale into our lungs. There are lots of different types of air purifier in the market. I'll skip you all the boring stuff and suggest you go for HEPA machine. Most air purifiers catered for pets does not need you to do anything other than leaving it running 24x7. Just turn it on, leave it in Auto mode and let the air purifier work its magic. The only thing you need to check is the filter lifespan every now and then. Replace the HEPA/ carbon filter once it reaches the end of its lifespan.

There you have it. My surefire way of dealing with pet dander, odor and allergies at one go without spending much effort. It's not perfect, but it's the best you can hope for as a superdad.
