The Essentials of Training Your Dog
- 09/06/2014
It is important, as a dog owner, that you learn how to communicate with your dog, and also teach it how to behave. The commands that you give your dog, show it how it should behave when in your presence. Here are some of the most common commands that you can give to your dog.
Come
This is one of the most basic commands that your dog should learn. You should use it in conjunction with the name of the dog to get better results. This is usually important should the dog get free from the house or leash, and start running all over the place and disturbing other people.
Sit
This is one command that the dog has to learn so that you can get time to attend to another matter. If you are preparing its meals, the command helps the dog to wait patiently without jumping on you. The dogs that understand this command have been found to be more controllable, and are less likely to go chasing rabbits and jumping on people.
Stay
This command is supposed to stop the dog in its tracks. If the dog was heading towards a dangerous street, where he or she could be knocked down by a vehicle, this commend will make it stop where it is. This is a difficult command to teach since the natural instincts and curiosity of a dog will sometimes be too powerful to control.
Wait
The command is different from the one above since it is an obedience command rather than a restrictive command. This shows the dog that it has to wait for your next command, and it will give you its utmost attention. This is great for dogs that tend to pull on a leash or rush out of a door before it is completely opened.
Down
This is different from sit, since this tells the dog that it should lie down on its belly. This is a more comfortable position for the dog, as opposed to the sitting position. This command will help keep your dog from tiring.
Stand
This is a command supposed to stop your dog from moving about. If you take the dog to the vet, then this can be a useful command. It can also be used when you are giving the dog a bath.
Okay
When you use this command, the dog understands that you are releasing it from a previous command. For example, if you had told it to wait as you opened the door, this command will tell the dog to continue and move through the door.
No
This is a command that tells the dog to stop doing what it was doping. This is essential when the dog does something undesirable. It is advised that you teach this command to a puppy at the beginning since they can be the most destructive.
Off
This is a command for the dog to get off and elevated place, like your best sofa, or to stop jumping on other people.
