Preventing Cystitis In Dogs
- 18/05/2014
Cystitis in dogs is one of the most common complaints that vets are presented with. However, there are a variety of things you can do to prevent this painful and stressful (for your dog) and expensive (for you) condition from occurring.
Cystitis in dogs, or in anyone, is considered by mainstream medicine to be something from the outside that 'attacks' the body. Things such as bacteria, virus' or other pathogens.
Whilst these organisms are certainly present, disease doesn't occur from the outside. It occurs from the inside. The internal economy of a body must be disturbed away from the normal homeostasis (or stability) for any health problem to raise its head. Put a different way, the immune system will not be up to its normal level of efficiency, to prevent external factors having a morbid influence.
But the signs and symptoms that body shows, are indicative of its best efforts to return the body to homeostasis.
Mild cystitis in dogs will often show up as slow or slightly painful passage of urine. There may also be blood in the urine, although you may find that hard to see. Serious cystitis will show up as an inability to urinate and should be treated as an emergency.
There are a variety of stressful factors that can lead up to any health problem in dogs. The most common ones include diet, stress, anxiety, obesity and sterilisation.
Stress is an enormously broad topic, including many factors, but in essence it covers anything that is outside normal Dog behaviour according to their evolution. Some of the most common can include living as an only dog, living with an anxious or angry family, lack of exercise, lack of free access both outside and adequate protection from the elements, any surgery and a lack of appreciation for Dog hierarchy.
Anxiety is the most common reason for aggression in dogs and is probably caused by this lack of understanding of Dog hierarchy. Anxiety doesn't stop there. In time, it will develop into pathology, as it will weaken the immune system. Fear and anxiety tend to be located around the renal system.
And so urinary tract infections develop. This is the cause of most cystitis in dogs. It is not the infection itself, it is not the external pathogen. The cause is the disturbance to the economy that undermines the immune system. THAT is the real cause.
Diet also has a profound effect on the health of your dog. The vast majority of commercial dog food is nutrient poor, lacks adequate quality and is toxic. How can any dog sustain a strong and effective immune system, when they are not fed well? Commercial dog food is also the number 1 reason for obesity.
Preventing cystitis in dogs, or any other health problem, is all about understanding health.
- Feed your dog a quality, healthy, homemade diet.
- Learn to understand Dog psychology.
- Exercise your dog according to their age, breed, health, etc.
- Allow free access both outside and inside.
These are only the basics, but are essential for any naturally healthy dog, who is capable of shrugging off the effect of external pathogens.
