Basset Hound - Basic Details You Should Know
- 25/03/2013
The Basset Hound, also known as the "low-set hound", is a hound breed of dog. They feature floppy ears and a brown or red and white coat. It was in the 1500s the breed is believed to have first came into existence and hunting small game is the reason they were first raised for. They are more popular as a companion dog nowadays. They can easily be identified by their dopey appearance and affectionate temperament. They're known to have originated in France and their breeding lineage includes the Bloodhound and other unknown breeds.
They're recognized as a medium sized breed. The suggested male and female size is 14 inches tall with a weight of 40-60 pounds. Their character is well-known to be sweet, gentle and good-natured. They can be unsuitable as a guard dog, as they are typically peaceful towards people they haven't met before. They are not known to be very intelligent, and rank 71st compared to every other breed when being trained to comprehend new things.
They're easygoing towards kids, and that can make them suitable for a family pet. Other pets like other dogs and cats can also live peacefully with them. Taking care of their coat is a relatively easy task. They need proper grooming every 8-10 weeks, and occasional brushing of their coat every week. They can be suitable for staying in an apartment, but prefer a good yard to run around in.
They are predominantly shorter-lived, unlike the majority of medium sized dogs, with an expected life of 10 years. They're vulnerable to patellar luxation, invertebral disc disease, glaucoma, epilepsy, skin conditions and ear infections, but their primary health risk is obesity. They take pleasure in things like long play sessions or runs around the yard. They need to be taken for moderate to long walks every day to reduce the threat of obesity.
If you choose to buy the Basset Hound you ought to be ready to meet their needs for attention. They are an excellent option for singles or families with time to care for a dog, but not the best option for households with prey animals like rabbits. One of the best features when it comes to this dog is that it will make a very loving companion dog due to its gentle and affectionate nature. Another quality which is appealing in regards to them is they will be happy to play games with you for hours as they actually possess a high level of stamina.
