Why Groom Your Dog?

  • 24/03/2015

Grooming your dog is one of the most important things and unfortunately one of the most ignored ones too. Most pet owners find it hard to take out some time to groom their dog and some others don't think it is that important. Combing and brushing your dog's fur once a month is definitely not going to help him or her. Grooming your dog regularly, on a weekly or even a daily basis is the way to go. Just buying a dog conditioner online and then forgetting about is a strict no-no if you want a healthy pet.

Why groom your dog?

This is a question asked by most pet parents. Yes, in fact, why do you have to groom them at all other than for making them look good? Looking good is just one of the benefits of grooming your dog and it is not even the most important one! Let us take a look at why dog grooming is so important.

1) It keeps your dog's fur fine and manageable. Irregular grooming leads to coarse and greasy fur. Grease on your dog's fur can lead to sebaceous cysts and can also block pores of the skin
2) Regular grooming improves blood circulation
3) Grooming your dog gives you the opportunity to check whether anything is wrong with him or her. For example, if you find a thick ball of fur in between the paws, you will know that something is wrong and will do something about it. You may also find cuts or bruises or even teas and flicks while grooming your dog.
4) Grooming enables your dog to become stress-free. It helps you with establishing a close relation with your dog. One that is built on love and care.
5) Grooming ensures that your dog's coat is healthy and well-aerated.
6) And off course, it makes your dog look good!

What to buy?
Other than the regular shampoo and conditioner which every pet parent needs, you also need to buy the following dog grooming products:

• A fine toothed comb
• A de-tangling spray
• A wide toothed comb
• A slicker brush
• Doggy toothbrush and toothpaste
• Ear wipes
• Eye wipes
• Ear drops
• A pair of scissors
• A mat or a rug

Types of dog coats

Grooming your dog depends on the type of coat he or she has. Combs and brushes for dogs should be bought only after understanding the type of coat your dog has. There are some breeds which come in both single-coated and double-coated varieties. While most German Shepherds are double coated, there are also some which are single coated.

Generally dog coats are divided into the following categories:

• Single Coat (Easiest type of coat for grooming, good examples are Rajapalyam, Poodles and Maltese)
• Double Coat (For example, German Shepherds and Beagles)
• Smooth Coat (For example, Jack Russell Terrier)
• Curly Coat (For example Afghan Hounds and Miniature Poodles)
• Wire Coat (Almost all types of terrier dog breeds fall into this category)

You must have understood the type of coat your dog has after going through the list. Each type of coat comes with different grooming requirements. While single-coated dogs are the easiest to maintain, curly coated dogs need more grooming than others. It is always good to hire the services of a professional groomer.
