Pit bull is the general term used to describe the American pit bull terrier breed. Hereditarily, pit bulls are strong and energetic. They also have lean and powerful builds which makes their diet a bit specialized.

Generally, the ideal pit bull diet should be comprised of fats, proteins, and fiber among other nutrients.

So, what to Feed Your Pit Bulls?

Just like most dog breeds out there, pit bulls are carnivores and it, therefore, natural for their diet to be meat-heavy. You always have to do research to understand clearly what your pit bulls need so that you can choose the best dog food for pitbulls. In spite of this fact, pit bulls do require significant portions of carbohydrates and fiber to support a healthy digestive system and good stability. So, while it’s okay to incorporate all kinds of meats into your dog’s diet, make sure to provide fats and fiber-rich carbohydrates too.

Some pit bull owners tend to think that since pit bulls are genetically lean and muscular, they don’t require much fat. The truth, however, is that fats are crucial to the general well-being of pit bulls. Other than ensuring a smooth digestion, fats help to prevent a dry and itchy coat/skin. Essential fatty acids too, like omega 3, are very important as they promote cardiovascular health in these dogs. Cod oils and salmon, which are available in liquid and pill form, are the best sources of omega 3 fats for pit bulls. To incorporate them into your dog’s diet, just combine or mix them with the dog’s food.

 Feeding Schedule

As most pit bull owners have realized, establishing a feeding schedule is an important part of promoting the health of any dog. Refrain from keeping food out all the time as it can lead to overfeeding; instead, establish a feeding regime where your dog feeds 2-4 times a day. That way, your pit bull will develop healthy feeding habits, and this will, in turn, help him/her to maintain a healthy weight

Critical Considerations

When it comes to weight and size, pit bulls do vary significantly depending on various factors including breeding or mixes. Therefore, while it’s still important to ensure that your dog is getting the nutrients it needs from its diet, it is wise to consider his/her weight, size, and activity levels before determining the ideal amount of food to offer at each feeding session.

Many dog feed manufacturers usually provide feeding guidelines on food packages, but it is still important to seek the advice or guidance of your veterinarian when it comes to food portions.

What Can’t My Pit Bull Eat?

A common mistake that pit bull owners make is to feed table scraps and other types of human food to their bulls. What these dog owners don’t know is that certain types of human food can be harmful to dog health. Additionally, feeding your bull human food could promote him/her to reject his/her food.

In spite of everything, there are some types human food that will not harm your pit bull but don’t attempt to offer any to your pit bull without consulting your veterinarian first.
