Tips On Keeping Your Dogs Safe on a Vacation

For most people, going on a vacation is a good treat for themselves. But for our pets, going on a vacation is pure heaven. Rarely will a pet dog be able to leave and explore other places that he has never been before. A well planned vacation ensures potential problems are avoided making everyone including your pet safe, and your trip fun and memorable. Steps can be taken to make sure our pet is safe and taken care of during the trip.
Before leaving, make sure your pet dog is in perfect health for travel. Long vacations can sometimes come with a lot of traveling. If you intend to travel by car, a few issues can arise, and it helps a lot to be prepared. If your dog likes to ride in cars, you've must have a box or crate for your dog to stay in while traveling to minimize dangers to himself and to the owners. Make sure the crate is buckled or tied down inside the vehicle to prevent sliding or being thrown about in case of an accident. In times where a crate is not available, it is highly recommended to have your pet tied down on a leash to prevent him from being thrown around and suffer serious injuries in case of an accident.
The same holds true if you drive a pick-up truck. Never leave your pet unsecured at the back of your truck during the trip, for there is a high risk of injury during sudden stops or if you get involved into an accident. An unsecured dog can easily jump out from the back of your truck while in motion and have serious injuries. If you intend to keep your pet at the rear seat of a car, make sure he has not eaten anything yet. Car or motion sickness usually arise when pets are fed just before the trip, however, it is very important that your dog is hydrated while traveling.
Dogs get bored, too. A bored dog can distract a driver, so it is important to entertain your dog during the trip. Stopping for gas and supplies gives you the chance to stretch your legs or go to the bathroom. Take this time to play with your dog a bit to stretch his legs or allow him to take a leak to ease him of and make him comfortable. It is also a good idea to take some of your pet's toys and some treats with you to help keep him busy and ease his boredom and become less of a liability inside the vehicle.
To avoid any possibilities of him contacting a disease while on vacation, your dog should be up to date and must have taken all required shots and vaccinations prior to your trip. It is also recommended to have with you all proofs of vaccinations as recent updates are needed upon boarding if you intend to travel by plane. This certification should be performed no later than two weeks prior to your travel if you intend to go out of the country and take your pet with you. Always be prepared and anticipate problems that may come to avoid any delays and keep you and your pet happy and safe during your vacation.
