Dogs are a ‘man’s best friend.' I can’t recall just how many times I have come across this phrase, and it’s a fact. These canine companions will probably stick with you through thick and thin, better than some of our human friends. Unless you are allergic to them, they make the best pets. I am a dog lover myself, and whenever I get the opportunity, we hang out together including sleeping in the same room and at times he sleeps on the bed. This is an issue that has caused some sharp debates, not just for me but other people too. In my opinion, as long as you have the right mattress, you can visit try mattress to identify the right one, factors such as having a dog in bed shouldn’t be a problem to your sleep.

I wouldn’t dispute the fact some challenges come about when we sleep with our pets. Still, they are quite manageable. On the other hand, the positives do outweigh the negatives. So what benefits do we enjoy when we sleep with our dogs?

Benefits of Letting Our Dogs Sleep in Our Beds

  1. They make us feel safe. Other than being your friend your dog will protect you from any imminent danger. Being alone in bed and the dark can at times be frightening, but with dogs, you feel somewhat protected.
  2. They give us warmth. Dogs have a body temperature that is approximately 5 to 6 degrees higher than ours. On a cold night, it can be cozy to cuddle up to these canine companions for warmth. They actually warm up the bed.
  3. They give us a sense of relaxation. I can attest to this, whenever I’m with Max, my dog, I feel happy and relaxed. Scientifically, being around dogs alleviates our oxytocin flow – oxytocin is the hormone responsible for happiness and affection. The dogs’ rhythmic breathing is also a great relaxer.

Cons of Sleeping With Your Dog

The primary challenge of sleeping with your dog is the fact that your sleep gets disrupted. I’ve had to wake up at least once a night from Max’s movements. It’s not appropriate, and we need to work around this problem. People with allergies such as asthma are also advised against sleeping with their dogs, but should they insist, an allergy shot to build resistance will be needed.

There's no problem sleeping with a dog on your bed. In fact, it poses more benefits, and any challenges can be quickly dealt with, with minor adjustments to our routines. For instance, using a memory foam mattress will reduce the impact of motion created by your dog. So, if you feel the need to have your furry companion with you in bed, go ahead!
