Safely Restrain Your Dog In The Car

  • 13/11/2015

Driving through town or on a highway with your dog is a common practice by many dog owners to keep their dog happy, allowing them to pop their heads out the window and bounce from seat to seat. However, it isn't very difficult to understand that this can be dangerous for your dog and even you the driver. You should make use of some type of restraint to secure your dog in the car, thus reducing the risk of an accident caused by distraction. Various restraints commonly used for safety purposes while travelling with a dog are discussed below.

· Kennel or Crate: A kennel or a crate is one of the options available to make traveling in your car with your pet a safe ride for both of you. A sturdy crate that can be secured in place is a better choice. For an SUV or similar vehicle, you can place the create securely in the cargo area. In other cars, a small crate can be used to fit on the back seat. To secure the crate on the seat, you can use a harness or straps.

· Harnesses: A seat belt or a harness in a car is another option that can be used to add safety while driving with your dog. A car harness is similar to a regular one, but it is designed to be used in a car. Look for a harness that is a perfect fit for your dog. The type with padding and wide straps can reduce impact damage during an accident.

· Car Seat: A car seat for a dog is similar to a harness, but it is designed especially for small dogs only. The main design concept with a car seat is to provide a higher seat level allowing the dog to look out the window and see the surroundings area while adding security at the same time. Buy a seat that can be attached to your car seat and the dog securely.

· Car Barrier: A car barrier acts as a blocker for a particular area of the car. A barrier can be placed on the backside of the front seats to restrict the dog to the back seats only. It can also be used at the back of the rear seats so the dog is restrained to the cargo area.

These are just some of the methods that you can use to restrain your dog in the car so that both you and your best friend can enjoy the trip and be safe at the same time. Remember that allowing your dog to stick it's head out the window can be fun for your dog but it can also be very dangerous.
