Whether it's a border collie herding sheep in Donegal or a Glen of Imaal terrier chasing tennis balls in a Dublin flat, the Irish love their dogs! A good 34 % of Irish households house at least one dog. They're most likely to have human names like Molly, Riley, Bailey or Poppy. Northern Ireland boasts the highest regional dog population in the UK. Unfortunately, not all dogs in Ireland have homes. A shelter's monthly bills can combine to as much as €60,000 per month, with veterinary and electricity bills being the highest. You can help them by adopting one of their dogs, giving them means to care for more dogs
How shelters care for animals
Opposed to those unsavoury puppy mills, animal shelters have concern for the happiness of the stray dogs they take in. With a little care, a manky haymes can be a fine thing indeed. Shelters not only give dogs food and shelter but also provide necessary veterinary care. Desexing is a must as are vaccinations and parasite removal. Any and all maladies will be screened and tended to as is appropriate.
Find the dog that's just right for you
What every dog dreams of is a family. Different dogs will naturally have different needs. Counsellors will ask about where you live and your daily schedule to match you with the best dog. No matter which dog you get, please remember that this is a live creature who needs love like life. You must be kind and forbearing with your new dog. Keep in mind the dog wants you to be pleased. If you're confused about what must be done to help your dog settle into your lifestyle, your local animal centre can help you.
The animals need you! Here's how you can help!
If you cannot adopt a dog, please consider fostering one. While animal welfare organisations can always use the money, time and effort are also appreciated. Please help any way you can, be that fostering, transporting, grooming, feeding or clerical work. If you have mates or kin who would like to add a dog to their household, suggest adopting. If you need more reasons to adopt, please consult this infographic. Adopting a dog saves a life. Be a dog's hero today.
