Puppy Teething - How to Ease the Process
- 19/02/2014
Puppies start teething between the age of three to six months. They chew whatever they can find that is within their reach around the house in order to soothe the pain and discomfort from pressure on their gums. The process of puppy teething can be eased by supplying them with chew toys and simple aids such as ice cubes.
Chew toys are made from hard rubber or plastic but will not harm teeth and gums that are developing. These toys not only assist while teething but also distracts puppies from harming household items such as furniture and shoes during this stage. The toys given to them for this purpose should also be fun and invite puppies to play.
Kong chew toys are made from natural rubber and an excellent choice for puppies to ease the pressure felt in their gums. Running water over Kong Chilly Bones and placing in the freezer provides soothing relief for sore gums. Nylabones are plastic dog chews in the shapes of bones, wishbones, balls, and sticks that are flavored with chicken, bacon, or liver. Simple dog rope toys can be soaked in chicken or beef broth and frozen for a fun treat that also helps the teething process.
There are also puppy teething rings made from all natural materials that are easily digested. These products clean teeth, massage gums, and even freshen breath. Other hard rubber or plastic teething toys are available in various shapes just like for human babies but are much stronger for canine chewing.
Some easy home remedies to ease the pain of swollen gums include making ice cubes or crushed ice from Aloe Vera juice. This substance is a natural anti-inflammatory and found in health food stores. Ice can also be made from chicken or beef broth for a tasty yet helpful treat.
Owners can gently massage their pup's gums with a finger or gentle dog toothbrush dipped in cold or icy water. This also teaches the animal to become accustomed to having his or her teeth brushed for good oral hygiene.
Although human babies benefit from applying Anbesol or Orajel on their gums, this is not recommended for puppies. The ingredients in these and similar products could cause severe allergic reactions prompting an emergency visit to the veterinarian. Rawhide bones should also not be given as chew toys for pups since they are difficult to digest especially in young tummies.
The best way to ease the process of puppy teething is to give them chew toys especially meant to soothe this stage of pain and discomfort. It is better to give puppies only two or three toys to occupy them instead of too many. Owners are then better able to monitor these toys and throw away any that become too destroyed before their precious pet chokes on any small pieces.
