Winter and low temperatures can be very bad for your dog; rain, snow and cold wind can harm your lovely friend's health. The risk is even higher, especially if your dog loves to stay outside. Common dog houses are not designed for protection against extreme weather conditions. Thus, preparing it for the winter is the best solution to keep your pet safe, warm and happy. Here is the easy way to winterize your dog house.

1. Prepare the Area

Find the warmest location to place the dog house. If possible, try to keep it away from wind and moisture. Clean the area thoroughly removing dirt and dust. Make sure the ground is even to keep the house steady.

Place a wood or concrete pallet under the dog house to elevate it and keep it dry. For additional insulation, place hay or insulation padding between the pallet and the dog house.

2. Make a Door

If you do not already own a dog house with a door, you can purchase one at your local pet store. Otherwise, you can easily create a door yourself; simply place a plastic or rubber mat making sure you have firmly attached it to the upper side of the house and is not touching the ground. Alternatively, you can use an old piece of carpet nailed to one side. This way, you keep the warmth inside while your dog can easily enter and exit the house.

3. Check the Exterior

Thoroughly inspect the exterior of the dog house. Ensure that there are no holes or leaks. If there are any, seal them tightly. Make sure that wind and moisture cannot get inside the dog house. It is highly recommended to use plastic sealants as they cannot absorb moisture.

4. Prepare the Inside

Properly prepare the inside of the dog house to keep your pet warm, comfortable and dry. Lay a plastic sheet on the bottom of the house to keep it dry. Purchase foam insulation from your local hardware store and cover the inside (walls, bottom and top). Finish by placing an old blanket or pet bed to keep your dog warm and cosy.

5. General Tips

- Use a dry soft cloth to wipe off your dog's paws after playing in the rain or snow. This will keep both your dog and dog bed dry.

- Avoid leaving your dog outside in heavy snow falling or extremely low temperatures. Do not risk as your favourite pet may catch a serious cold.

- Constantly check the dog house and bed. If the bed is wet, take it out and replace it.

- Make sure there are no nails sticking out while placing the insulation foam. Your dog may get severely injured.

- Keep on checking your dog's water bowl. If the temperature drops, water will turn into ice leaving your dog without water.

Your dog is your best friend; treat him with respect and care. Properly winterize the dog house and keep your pet safe during winter.

Nevertheless, it is best to ensure that your dog can indeed handle low temperatures. Some breeds simply cannot take it, especially if they are elderly.
