Potty Training An Adult Dog With 3 Tips Plus 1 Unconventional But Effective Tip

IT'S EASIER TO TEACH THEM SOMETHING NEW THAN BREAK AN OLD HABIT

Remember, dogs aren't humans. The best thing to do is just introduce something new rather than stop him from peeing in the house. If you teach him something new it will override the old habit.

Let's say you have a habit of waking up 15mins before work and rushing out the door. To correct this you say "I'll start waking up 1hour before work instead of 15mins". If you start and continue to wake up 1 hour before work that becomes the "new habit" which actually "broke" the old habit. In reality, you started doing something new which, depending on how you look at it, either "broke" the old habit or "replaced" it. Either way, you have something new which over-rode the old.

LET THE FECES AND URINE HANG AROUND FOR AWHILE

I know that this may sound a little crazy but trust me it's not. This is only necessary in the beginning stages of potty training an older dog. That very first time you get him to "go" where you want him to- leave it there. Not forever, just for a few days.

This will make it easier for your dog to remember where he went. Remember dogs have a very strong sense of smell. When they urine they pick up the scent or ammonia in their urine. So leave their urine and mainly the feces where their new spot is. This acts as a marker for them to return to.

SOUND LIKE A BROKEN RECORD

Absolutely! Unlike with your children, you'll actually like the idea of saying the same thing over and over. Choose a short catch phrase to describe your dog using the bathroom. I like to say "Go Pee". With my dog, this describes both urinating and defecating. I know that sounds crazy in our minds to say this for both but, it's simple for my dog and it works.

You may want to say "Go Potty". Whatever phrase you choose just be sure to stick with it. Once you have adopted your catch phrase, then be sure to sound like a broken record. You'll use this over and over again every single time you want your dog to go outside to use the bathroom.

SAME PLACE, SAME TIME

Think of how you go to your job- same place, same time, just about everyday. Same goes for your dog. When it's time for your dog to do his business, remember what I stated earlier. Use the catch phrase. Where we instill a new habit is by taking your dog to his place of business at the same times of day every single day.

A good example of this would be: As soon as you get up in the morning say 7am. Once in the afternoon or evening let's say 2pm. Then again at maybe 6pm. Then once more say around 10pm. Just a rough guideline of how you may want to initiate the "same place, same time" routine. This gets your dog used to going at those times and not before and not after.
