Pet Ownership 101: The New Puppy Checklist

  • 01/01/2014

Are you excited for that day when your new pup arrives home? Hold your horses, before getting all hyped up to be a "parent" to a new puppy, you need to make sure that you've got all the essentials covered.

Here's a quick yet complete list of puppy supplies that you need to have before your new pup comes home:

1. Puppy Food - Food is number one on the list. There are tons of puppy food brands and variants out in the market, so make sure you get the right one for your pup. Also, it's ideal to refrain from switching puppy food brands or variants. So whatever brand or variant the puppy is already used to, it's advisable to stick to that too.

2. Bowls for Food and Water - Have a separate bowl for each. Stainless steel bowls are highly recommended as they are sturdy and very easy to clean.

3. Bed and Bedding - There are a lot of bed baskets sold. But in case you are short in budget, you can use a crate, a box, or something similar. See to it that your pup has bedding too. Puppies just like little babies, love to cuddle up inside blankets.

4. Toys - A puppy isn't a puppy when it's not playful. Instead of tempting your pup to toy with your furniture or other items inside the house, have dog toys around. Have something like a Kong, Nylabone, or a perhaps a ball.

5. Puppy Treats - Puppy treats are technically not the regular puppy food that you give to your pup everyday. From the word itself, they're treats -- they should only be given as a reward for good behavior.

6. Enzyme Cleaners - Enzyme cleaners can neutralize the foul stench of urine. You'd eventually be able to potty train your pup, but for the first few weeks, you really need this.

7. Grooming Kit - Have the basic items -- nail clipper, brush or comb, etc.

8. Disposal Materials - Puppies mean poop, that's for sure. Have plastic bags or a pooper scooper readily available.

9. I.D. Tag and Leash - A leash about 6 feet long is ideal when you walk your puppy. Also, little pups tend to explore a lot on their own, especially when they are new to the place. Thus, having an I.D. tag around your puppy's neck will give you that piece of mind that your puppy can be returned if ever it does wander off.
