Older Dog Potty Training - 3 Simple 'I Will Never Clean Up Poop In The House Again' Tips

  • 18/05/2014

So you're looking for some older dog potty training tips? Don't you just hate it when you have to get on your hands and knees and scrub and clean the carpet/floor? Doesn't it just work your nerves when the stench of poop lingers in your home? Following these simple steps will give you the power to never clean any poop or urine up in your home again. Follow these simple steps and your dog will truly become "man's best friend." This will allow you to enjoy your dog to the fullest.

Tip#1 Choose a command phrase

You'll want a command phrase specifically for when you want your dog to use the bathroom. For older dog potty training, I use the phrase "Go pee" for both defecating and urinating. Since your dog is a little bit older, it's real easy to confuse the dog if you use different phrases when you want the dog to carry out a specific task. By using the same command phrase every time for using the bathroom they'll always associate "Go Pee" or whatever phrase you choose with using the bathroom.

Tip#2 Choose a location - the same one every time

Because dogs do well with routines and habits this only plays into their strengths. Older dog potty training becomes far easier when they are used to going to the same spot every single time. When your dog urinates or defecates in that same location they are also marking their territory. When you combine the same command phrase with the same location your dog then associates the phrase and location together.

Tip#3 Give your dog praise for the good stuff and ignore the bad... for now

Needless to say, you'd rather your dog go outside rather than in. Positive reinforcement is going to get you farther than anything else. Believe me, I feel your anger when your dog goes inside on the white carpet or leaves a puddle in the carpet or on the floor. Instead, be sure to reward your dog with a small treat and/or a good scratch behind the ear accompanied by "good boy!"

By following these 3 tips it creates a powerful process in your dog's mind. First, they receive a command: "Go pee." This also makes you the leader, seeing as how you're giving orders. Second, you take him to his place of business. Third, you reinforce his following your directions with lots of praise. This gets your dog liking the idea of "following your lead" because they see how much this pleases you as well as the praise they receive. By following these older dog potty training tips, you'll never have to clean up feces or urine in the house again.
