Making Relocating With Your Dog As Easy As A Walk Around the Block

  • 01/11/2016

Making the move to a new home can be a daunting process. Routines, one’s orientation, and other variables are novel once again when you’re thrust into a new environment. However, at least you know it’s coming. Your dog on the other hand is left blindsided. Whatever fear or apprehensions you may feel will also be felt by your dog. Before you’re all packed up and ready to go consult the following strategies to make the move as seamless as possible for your K9 companion.

Perform a Walk Through

I’m sure you’ve been inside the house or apartment you’ll be moving into a couple times before you take the plunge. On one of these trips bring along your dog so they can get acquainted with the house. Take them on a tour of your place, let them sniff around and investigate. During this introduction you’ll also notice anything hazardous or anxiety inducing that you may have not noticed before. Having familiarized your dog with the new place before moving will put him or her at ease just that little bit more.

Make Sure the House Smells Like You

Your pooch loves you and in effect loves your scent. Changing environments is made a lot easier when you know you have your loved ones around. It’s possible that your dog isn’t sure if the house comes with the human they’ve grown to love. To put them at ease, bring a number of the pieces of furniture that you had at your last home with you.

Acclimate Your Dog to Being Alone

Your dog is most likely comfortable with you leaving the house for a few hours at a time. But when you rip the turf out from under them and settle down in a new place they may develop a bit of separation anxiety. You can teach your dog to overcome its fear by leaving it at home for brief intervals as you go about your day. Gradually increasing the interval that you leave your dog at home will teach it that you’re coming back and that there’s no reason to fret.

New settings make people do some odd things; dogs are no different. First things first, make sure that your dog cannot escape from your home. However, if your dog does get loose it’s important that people know where you pooch lives. You can implant a tracker in them at the local vet or simply update the dog tags so that they have your current address.
