Is the Dog Food You're Feeding Your Puppy the Right Kind?

  • 01/01/2014

The next time you take a trip into your local supermarket for dog food take a minute and look around, you will see many types of different brands of dog food both canned and bagged. If you thought that it would be easy to make a quick choice and be on your way, that might not be the case. There are different dog foods for different stages of a dog's life, and if your furry friend no more than a puppy then he or she will need special nutrients until they are considered an adult.

The need to feed your puppy specially formulated food until they are an adult is a must. It is particularly important to feed your puppy the same food at home as was fed by the original owners. The reason is simple, Because a puppy is so young their stomachs and digestive systems are very delicate changing their diet can have severe effects and cause un-needed stress.

However, if you are unhappy with the brand that your puppy was started on, Have no fear it is something that is easily fixed, A gradually change over a period of time will fix this small delimea. Picking a good dog food is essential, so going with a cheaper dog food brand may not be the best case. Your growing puppy needs lots of nutrients and good proteins in order to be healthy - feeding your puppy a poor quality brand of food can result in a lot of illness and vet bills later on in life. Also, a reputable and good quality brand is more nutritious so your dog will actually eat less and spend less time answering nature's call. Also their stool will become less smelly so even though you are paying more for the food to begin with, you will have to buy less of it.

Now you need to remember that if you are planning on changing your doggie's diet that it needs to be a gradual change. Only replace a round about 10% of his old food with new for the first couple of days. Then gradually move up to 20% and then 30% and so on. If your dog vomits or has diarrhea, then go back on the percentage of new food until his or her system adjusts. Putting fido on a good food schedule is very important in your puppy's life.

Remember that younger dogs will need to eat more often, By the time your puppy is ready to take his journey to your new home you will most likely be feeding him about 3 times during the day.

By the time your best friend reaches six months of age you will be able to feed him twice a day.

By the time your puppy reaches a year old and he has reached his maximum height you will want to switch to an adult brand of food. Taking the time to make sure your puppy gets the proper nutrition he or she needs in the beginning of their early development will ensure a happy and healthy life for years to come.
