CBD is turning many people on to cannabis products. The cannabinoid’s medical potential and the fact that CBD is nonintoxicating has made cannabis mainstream. Users enjoy the effects so much that a new market has emerged, CBD for dogs.

Pet owners are giving CBD to their dogs for the same reasons they are benefiting from the product. While this phenomenon may seem strange to those new to the world of cannabis, if you understand how CBD interacts with the body and the brain it makes perfect sense.

CBD is perfectly safe for dogs if taken in the correct dosage. While humans and mammals tolerate CBD well, there still are risks. Overdosing can lead to fatigue, headaches, nausea, upset stomach, and even diarrhea.

There aren’t any serious side-effects associated with CBD. Even at extremely high doses, experts believe CBD to be safe. There aren’t any cases of CBD or any cannabis product causing a death. While this is reassuring to users looking to experiment with treating their dog’s separation anxiety, it is still important to be informed before dosing your four-legged friend.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD has gained so much attention because there is scientific evidence that it affects the endocannabinoid system or ECS. This is a complex network of neurotransmitters, receptors, and enzymes believed to regulate mood, inflammation, memory, appetite, and the sleep-wake cycle.

All mammals have an ECS. This is why pet owners are sharing their favorite new health and wellness products with their dogs.

CBD for Dogs

CBD oil is safe for dogs, but pet owners should still take precautions. Start with a small dose. Weedmaps recommend 1mg for every 10 pounds. Dr. Hemp Me, one of the leaders in the CBD for pet space, recommends 0.25mg for every pound of body weight for a regular dose and 0.5mg for every pound to achieve a stronger dose. There is no harm in under-dosing your dog the first few times just to make sure their body handles the CBD.

While all CBD is not created equally, there are different types and methods for extraction, CBD made for pets should be human grade. The only difference in CBD that is marketed for pets is the potency. CBD is usually sold in a 1-month supply. Dosage is a little different and designed to cater to smaller weights, but the CBD is going to contain the same ingredients you would expect to see in a product marketed for humans.

Giving Your Dog CBD

For all first time CBD users, it’s a good idea to start small. Give your dog a drop or two of CBD oil in their water and monitor the results. Consistency is key to getting the benefits out of this cannabinoid. Stick with the low dose for a week or so, paying attention to your dog’s behavior. If they are handling the CBD, you can increase the dosage.

CBD is not a one and done experience like THC. For CBD to have an effect on the endocannabinoid system it needs to be built up in the body. Use consistently for at least a month when giving your dog CBD oil.
