How To Help Your Dog And Cat Get Along

  • 18/04/2020
dogs-or-cats.jpgThere's still an ongoing debate about which is better: cats or dogs.

Each pet has its strengths and weaknesses. For example, cats are more independent than dogs, but they get startled more easily. Dogs show more affection, but they require more attention.

While there are some clear differences between the two, it doesn't mean they can't get along together and live in the same space. One is not better than the other!

Introducing your dog to a cat (or vice versa) can be overwhelming for both pets. However, with your help, it's definitely possible! Here's how to go about pairing your new pet with your cat or dog.

1. Consider Personalities

Instead of taking breed into account, consider personalities. If your dog is very territorial, he won't get along too well with a skittish cat. Or if you have a hyper kitten, your elderly dog won't be too thrilled to share its space.

So what do you do?

If you are adopting a new pet, make sure their personalities won't clash. Talk to their previous owners and shelters to learn more about the animal: have they lived with other animals before? Did they get along?

Sometimes the union of a dog and cat is unavoidable. It could be that you and your partner are moving in together, and you both have house pets. Before taking extreme measures and giving one pet away, have a backup plan in place.

2. Ensure A Protected Space for the Cat

It's likely that both animals will learn to co-exist with one another. However, until then, make sure your cat feels protected. Cats are likely to be more nervous than dogs and they like to mark their territory.

One way to help them mark their territory is having separate living areas for each pet. These cat trees for large cats give your pet a lot of space away from the dog on the ground. This will give your cat a quiet place to rest and play. Planting the tree next to a window is a good idea since cats love to observe.

Make sure you feed each pet in different parts of the house, so they know what area is theirs. Eventually, they will become accustomed to each other's smell and personality. And, in some cases, they might become friends!

3. Train Your Dog

It's much easier to train your dog than your cat! This is because cats are not domesticated the same way as dogs. If you teach your dog to control its impulses and discipline it, they'll get along just well with a cat around.

If your dog chases food that falls off the kitchen table or gets extremely energetic with a squeaky toy, it may not get along too well with a feline. Training it to stay put will go a long way.

Along with making sure they are well behaved, exercise your dog's mind and body. This means taking them for walks and playing fetch with them. Naturally, dogs have more energy than cats. It's important to help them release this energy so that they're less hyper around cats and kitties.

If you don't have time to take your dog on a walk, consider hiring a dog walker or taking them to doggy daycare. Not only will it allow them to get along better with the cat, but it's great for their health too!

Conclusion

Helping a dog and cat that didn't grow up together get along can be difficult, but it's not impossible! Most times, they just require a little bit of help from their owners.

Following these three tips will make for a smoother transition for your furry friends!
