Home Cooking VS Manufactured Dog Food
- 08/01/2012
- Categorized in: Diet and Nutrition
You probably would not feel too healthy or look your best if you only ate food that came in cans or dried food in large bags. But this is what many dogs are existing on. We will see how things play out when we look at home cooking VS manufactured dog food.
Many manufactured dog foods label the packaging to say "Chicken" or "Protein" and it can even be listed as one of the main ingredients. However, protein can legally mean chicken claws, beaks and other elements that you don't even want to know about.
Additionally, many dog foods add fillers. What are dog food fillers? They are empty elements. They have very few or no calories, they have no nutritional value and they pass right through a dog's body only to be eliminated when they have their next bowel movement. So why are they added? They are added to dog food to make it appear as if there is more food than there actually is, they plump up and bulk up the food that is there.
What else can be in dog food? Colouring to make it look appealing, this is done to many snacks and treats. There are also usually additives to preserve the food to help it have a longer shelf life.
None of the above elements led to a dog eating healthy meals which lead to having a healthier body. So what can you do? You can find a manufactured dog food that does not have fillers, colouring, and additives and uses only real protein from chicken meat or you can opt to home cook for your pet.
Home cooking will ensure that your dog only ingests real, wholesome foods that are prepared fresh. Many recipes will be able to be cooked in bulk and then refrigerated for up to a week or frozen for months so that you can thaw out portions as you need them.
Many home cooked meals for dogs will have chicken, lamb or fish as the main ingredient. Since dogs are omnivores and not carnivores (they need to have veggies and fruit along with meat), other ingredients will be healthy foods such as potatoes, peas, peanut butter and pasta. Since healthy fats are a part of a healthy canine diet, olive oil is usually an ingredient. Dogs can eat carrots, bananas and many other foods that most people have in their house already.
Home cooking for your dog can save you money since you will have many foods in your home already and in general, home cooking is usually less expensive than buying foods that are canned. Lastly, your dog can have more energy, less stomach ailments enjoy the good health that goes hand in hand with healthy eating.
