Foul!
- 23/06/2010
- Categorized in: General
Wouldn't it be great if dogs picked up after themselves? Unfortunately, they don't.
Dog fouling is a serious issue; not only is it a litter offence, but it is also a nuisance and a health hazard, especially to our children playing in open spaces.
Please be a responsible dog owner; if you have a dog, it is up to you as a responsible citizen to keep our environment safe. Clean up if your dog fouls in a public place and put it in a litter bin. If you don't, you could face an on-the-spot fine of €150 or face a fine of €3000 in court.
Pooper scoopers are available to the public free of charge from City Hall, from Environmental Services in Menapia Building and from libraries. Or you could use a small plastic bag to clean up after your dog – why not try keeping a roll of these bags beside your dogs lead to remind you to take one with you when you walk your dog?
Under the Litter Pollution Act 1997, dog owners must remove their pet's waste from public places and dispose of it in a responsible manner. The Litter Pollution Act defines the following places as 'public':
• Public roads and footpaths
• School/ sports grounds
• Beaches
• Areas around shopping centres
• The immediate area surrounding another person's house
Guide dogs for the blind and working dogs (e.g. dogs used by Gardai, etc) are exempt from these rules.
Anyone who fails to clean up after their pet can be fined €125 litter fine or a fine of up to €3,000 in the District Court. Remember: bring a bag with you when walking your dog.
