Brushing:
Dogs enjoy being brushed and the type of brushing depends on the type of coat they have. Dogs with long hair need to be brushed everyday to prevent their hair from getting tangled. Dogs with short hair need to be brushed only once or twice month. Dogs with medium length hair need to be brushed at least once in a week. The combs and brushes for dogs should be bought depending on the type of hair they have.
Regardless of the type of hair your dog has, he/she can be brushed daily!
Nail trimming
Dogs don't like to get their nails trimmed. But, so do many humans! Unlike many humans, dogs don't chew off their nails and they need to be trimmed to avoid accidental scratches. Your dog will never let you trim his/her nail if pain is a part of the process. The best thing to do is to go for a completely pain-less process for making your dog comfortable with the whole idea. Or else, your dog will end up with long and dirty nails. Ideally a professional dog groomer or a vet should be hired for trimming the nails of your dog. Trying it yourself for the first time can prove to be very dangerous and painful as well.
Bath
Some dogs love to bath and some others just hate it. Just getting your dog to stand at one place seems like a huge task during bathing! Bathing once a week is good but it is also acceptable to bath your dog once in two weeks. The frequency should be reduced to once/twice a month during winter. Always use a dog conditioner and a shampoo which is soap-free.
Ear cleaning
The ears are a very sensitive part of any dog and cleaning them needs professional help. A novice trying to clean the ear of a dog can end up damaging the ear canal. Your dog might lose his/her hearing after that. It is best to consult a vet about cleaning the ear of your dog and also about the products which need to be used for the same. Dogs with floppy ears, for example Cocker Spaniels, need special attention because their ears don't have as much exposure to the air as other breeds.
Hair cut
Some breeds like Shih Tzu and Poodle, need to get their hair cut every two or four weeks because their hair never stops growing. This is yet another task which is best left to professional dog groomers.
