Dog Scared of Other Dogs

Dogs scared of other dogs and animals. This is a socialisation issue. What has caused this issue? Well there are a number of things:

• he or she has never been around other dogs.
• he or she thinks he/she is pack leader.
• he or she does not get enough exercise and develops behavioural issues.
• he or she is being pampered and babied too much

To deal with this problem you have to socialise him or her with other dogs for this you may need a dog trainer or take him or her to a doggie day care with good tentative dog handlers. Or if you think you have what it takes to be strong and get him or her socialised then you can read on.

The first step would be to get him or her some good exercise to relax them and calm them down; a good long walk is recommended or one that gets the him or her to pant. Remember dogs come from the ancestral wolves; a wolf pack will hunt all night running and walking for miles for food and probably sleep at sunrise and move around somewhat during the day. Running and walking will relax your him or her as well.

Once the he or she is tired and relax let the introduction begin with a playful, calm and not aggressive dog; he or she will be scared and jumpy and may growl and try to bite the other dog, let him or her calm down; talk to him or her assuring that everything is OK.

Confine the him or her to an area with the other dog make sure that you are there to break or step in to diffuse any fights or attempts to fight. If you see the him or her with lowered tail and head down then you should calm him or her down as this is the sign of a fearful insecure dog and he or she is in a defencive mode. pet him or her and let it know it is OK. See if he or she is up to playing with it is favourite toy or eat its favourite treat.

It is also recommended that you take him or her for walks with other dogs maybe 2 or 3 let your dog blend in with the group.

The more exposure he or she gets exposure to other dogs the more sociable the dog will be. A well socialise dog should sniff other dogs, with their tails held in a relax position and their heads held at a normal level not too erect or not lowered in threaten manner.

Also if you are excessively pampering your him or her please stop, dogs want to be dogs and they look for leadership if they are the leader it is very stressful for the dog and they develop behavioural issues as they can't cope with it.
