Dog Parents Around The World Agree: Dogs Feel Love

  • 13/05/2017

But how do you respond when someone questions whether dogs are sentient beings?

I have the pleasure of working with dog owners day in and day out, and I can give you some examples to silence the doubters.

But first, let’s look at the science

Dogs value their owners above anything

We may see the word through our eyes, but smell is the sense that is most important for your four-legged friend. So to figure out what matters to dogs, scientists at Emory University studied how dogs respond when presented with various smells. Through an MRI, scientists found out that the reward centre in a dog’s brain lights up like nothing else when they smell their owners.

Tennis balls, treats and other dogs cannot compete. The scent of a dog’s owner is everything. You make your dog’s life complete.

Now, let’s look at what we know of our dogs. Our dogs tend to react negatively whenever anything threatens their time with us; chewing, excessive barking and messing in the house are all common behaviours associated with separation anxiety. Let’s take a closer look at some of the negative emotions our dogs clearly express in various situations.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the negative emotions our dogs clearly express in various situations.

Grief

Have you ever heard about a dog or cat who visits the grave of their previous owner? Nay-sayers may come up with logic-based reasons for this phenomenon, but we know better.

So many pet owners come to us looking for a homoeopathic remedy to help their dog’s depression after a death in the family. The dogs stop eating, playing and showing any signs of happiness. They wouldn’t have this type of reaction if they did not have an emotional connection with their owners.

Jealousy

Bring a new puppy into your home and you’ll see how jealous your dog can get. Dogs strive for our love and affection and can get very upset when something threatens the bond.

Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety is a big issue for pet owners, and it’s one that we deal with very often at Homeoanimal. Pets do form an emotional connection with their owners and can become very stressed when they are separated.

Not too long ago, we were approached by someone who rescued a dog that was dealing with severe separation anxiety due to abandonment. This dog’s owner could not keep her and had dropped her off at the animal shelter. While at the shelter, the dog became very withdrawn and depressed. Her depression didn’t even dissipate when she was adopted.

Dogs do feel love, and they always love their owners. If you have a dog in your life, it may seem silly to even question their feelings. Dogs love fiercely and unconditionally.

And because we love our dogs in return, we don’t want them to experience negative feelings, such as jealousy, grief and separation anxiety.

There are many ways to treat separation anxiety and depression. Here at HomeoAnimal, we've seen great results with homoeopathy, but there are also other natural and complementary medicine treatments that may work too.
