Decoding Your Dog
- 17/03/2018
Dogs can be hard to read at times. We want to understand what they’re thinking but as they can’t speak it is not always easy! This infographic from GAP looks at how you can better understand your dog, so you know how to react to their every need.
What expressions mean can sometimes be dependant on other factors. For example, yawning can, of course, mean your dog is tired but if they’re not about to nap, it could also indicate that they’re feeling a bit stressed about things and need to calm down.
Misinterpreting dog signals can be dangerous as if you’re unaware of when an animal could be aggressive it could spell disaster. For example, many of us will recognise an outright aggressive dog but people will be less aware that a dog can be dangerous if they’re afraid. Dogs can bite if they feel cornered so it’s vital to tread carefully in these situations.
The alert posture is another interesting one as it means the dog has yet to make up their mind about the nature of what they’ve encountered. This could result in aggression, fear, or submissive play so be vigilant when your dog adopts this posture. Another potentially aggressive behaviour to watch out for is the tail between legs as again depending on other signals, this has the potential to escalate to defensive aggression.
Other signals such as tailing wagging also mean more than people think. It’s a commonly held belief that this means the dog is happy but it more means that the dog is interested in the interaction. Woofs can also mean different things depending on their pitches, durations, and frequency. For example, barks that are spaced out usually indicate a low level of excitement.
The reality is most dogs are no threat to anyone and all their actions are very innocent. However, it’s still good to be aware of what makes your dog tick so you know how to react quickly in potentially hazardous situations. See the full infographic now and hopefully, you will learn something new from it and better understand your dog!
