Among the serious problems with behaviour of dogs is what owners call dog aggression. This problem, if left unchecked, grows to even a worse problem called violence. However, many people take this for granted because they do not understand that it is a problem.

When your dog becomes overly aggressive on his food, it means that you as the owner is not asserting enough effort to show them who is the boss.

The most important thing to do when your dog shows such tendencies that can be quite aggressive is to actually put a stop to it. The following are some of the ways on how to do it.

Do not back down - When your pet is starting to show signs of aggression and then you backing down is like telling your dog it is alright to do that. You should draw the line.

Dog-dog aggression - When another dog is the target of the aggression, just separate the two dogs. Then you have to make sure that you give them their food in two different areas where they do not see each other.

Family involvement - in dealing with the dog's behaviour, you must involve all the members of your family. Your dog affects not only you but also your entire family so they should also help in dealing with your dog's aggression.

Feeding control - You should take control of your dog's feeding habits. Be strict in how he eats. Before you let them eat, be sure to have them sit down. They have to realise that they should earn something before they eat. Make them pay the right amount of attention onto you as you are feeding them. They have to realise that their food source is actually you.

Feeding time - Make sure that you already ate before feeding your dog. You have to let them know that you should be eating first before them.

No rewards - Do not give your dog any reward if it growls at you. But you should not punish him either. Do not show aggression at the dog as this will just agitate him.

Showing attention and feeding by hand - One way to stop aggressive behaviour is to hand feed your dog and showing special attention to them. By hand feeding them, they will get used to you being there while eating. If you own a puppy, this would be the right time to start hand feeding them. In feeding your dog without agitating him, you must make sure that you are the alpha leader not the dog. Attention is also a must as this can reduce aggression considerably.

Attention and hand feeding - One of the ways that you can actually put a halt to behaviour that is quite aggressive is to actually hand feed your pet dog. It is also important that you show them special attention. You have to do this while you are feeding them. This can be pretty effective especially during times when you are trying to let them calm down when it is time for their feeding.
