Canine Tips - Discover the Important Benefits of Dog Exercise

  • 19/02/2014

Although it's rather simple to care for a dog, there are many different things required to do so properly. One of them is making sure your canine has plenty of exercise. Dogs that are kept outside should have plenty of space to roam around. Those kept indoors should be taken outside two or three times a day for exercise and physical activity in addition to their bathroom breaks.

Failure to provide your dog with adequate exercise is very bad for his health as many serious conditions can develop. It should go without saying that obesity can become a problem. However, dogs can also develop heart problems due to lack of exercise as well.

Dogs that have an ideal weight will typically live much longer than their obese counterparts. Exercise also helps dogs digest their food properly. If they sit around too much, they will be much more likely to experience constipation and other digestive problems.

Exercise doesn't just offer physical benefits for your dog, as it provides mental stimulation as well. Dogs that are locked up inside all day won't experience anything the world has to offer. They won't smell new scents or hear new sounds.

This can lead to boredom and the onset of behavioral problems like chewing and scratching. If you have your dog inside, then he may start knocking over furniture or scratching it up. Anxiety or excessive barking may also become problems too.

Getting out and exercising helps with your dog's socialization skills. Since they will have new experiences, they won't be so fearful. When it is time to go to sleep, your dog won't have enough energy to play around and will gladly fall asleep for the night. Therefore, if you don't exercise your dog, he may stay awake when it's time to go to sleep due to the built up energy.

As dog owners, we like to think of our pets as members of the family. You spend time with your children if you have any. Your dog doesn't want to be left out and wants to spend time with you too. There are fewer better ways to bond with your canine than to take it out for walks and playtime.

Despite the fact that exercise is important to the health of your dog, you should always check with a vet before implementing an exercise regimen for your dog. Your dog's health status will need to be checked out to ensure that exercise won't cause any unforeseen problems.

Dogs with heart problems certainly shouldn't be taken out for strenuous exercise. Those that are obese or older should also be started off slowly. Dogs approximately one to two years old may not need strenuous exercise yet either since their bones may still be developing.

Exercise is just one aspect of caring for your dog as you have already learned. Feeding your dog properly is even more important. Failure to do so can be just as harmful to his health. Some commercial dog food is like junk food for your dog. Instead, show your dog you care by feeding him homemade dog food recipes.
