Are Adaptil Collars Safe?

  • 27/04/2019

Adapting to a new environment and coping with changes can be tricky and stressful for canines. In some dogs, mild fears can develop into phobias that cause stress-related conditions. The first 16 weeks are crucial, therefore, special attention is required. During this time the dogs may experience good and bad circumstances that can cause stress-related behavioural problems in adulthood. The ADAPTIL collar is used to control the stress-related symptoms in puppies and adult dogs. The collar releases pheromone which provides a sense of assurance to puppies. It is the same pheromone that the nursing mother dog produces around her puppies. This helps them feel safe and secure when encountering new experiences and unknown environments.

You will find mixed opinions on the benefits and side effects of Adaptil Collars. While some canine parents found it life changing for their Fido, some didn’t really notice any difference. This is because mechanism of pheromones depends on a dog’s pituitary response to the pheromone. This response varies from dog to dog, hence the difference. The collar has no long term side effects. In fact, it can be of a great comfort and alternative to drug regimens which carry more risk.

However, improper use of the collar can cause unexpected results. Users have noticed skin irritation and flesh wounds around the neck and brought up the concern inn product review. The active ingredient of the collar is the dog appeasing pheromone, therefore it is more likely that any negative reaction to the collar is caused by physical abrasions. So to ensure any skin injuries, make sure the collar fits dog perfectly. If not, you should get it changed. An excessively tight collar will choke your dog so make sure you find the perfect match.

The collar works on the science of pheromones which works differently on each dog. Therefore, you can’t anticipate the changes in the personality of a dog post using the ADAPTIL collar. Your pet might become more aggressive or adapt a personality you didn’t desire.

DAP Collars work effectively to change the behaviour of almost every dog; however, there are some canine friends that don’t experience any change whatsoever. For them there are other methods of controlling their behaviour and relieving their anxiety. Supplements, treats and treatments that use ingredients like chamomile are a great option. Chamomile is known for is stress relieving properties and soothing effects. Unlike the pheromones, Chamomile will also benefit you whenever you come in contact with it.

Alternative prescription medications are also good options for pets with severe behavioural problems. Some specialists even recommend trying antidepressants such as Prozac for your pet. However, make sure you consult your vet before putting your dog on medication. Though these solutions are ideal for pets that seem to be immune to the effects of the DAP Collar, the collar does work great for most dogs. In fact, you can see how well the collar works for yourself, by consulting a vet or trying it out for yourself!
