Administering first aid for dogs can be a daunting experience if your dog has a cut or a scrape if it is the first time that you have indeed done it. However, if your dog is convulsing and you know panicking could cost your dog his life, you have no other option than to give first aid for dogs and think later.

There are two common types of fit that your dog could have, and both will need first aid for dogs. The first is a single fit or convulsion. These are rare unless your dog happens to have epilepsy, in which case your vet may have told you what to do in terms of dog first aid in the event of a fit when the condition was diagnosed. A single fit will last for a maximum of two minutes and first aid for dogs consists of making sure that your dog’s airways are clear and restraining him if he is near any furniture or similar objects that could cause further harm.

The second common type of fit is far more serious and often beyond first aid for dogs. A continuous convulsion, or those that consistently repeat over the a twenty-four hour period will need dog first aid from a vet. Again, it may be necessary to restrain the dog, but you should get him to the vet as soon as possible. Only a vet would be able to give your dog the necessary medication to calm him and prevent further fitting.

If your dog does experience a fit or convulsion then you must seek veterinary advice as soon as possible, but always attempt to administer first aid for dogs during the fit so your dog is as comfortable as possible.
