Teaching your dog to obey certain commands is important. While many commands are simply for fun, like "play dead," "speak," or "roll over," other commands are essential for getting along in a world full of humans and other dogs. 1. Become a Companion

You must catch the dog in the act, then say firmly, "No," and take him or her outside. Each time he or she goes to the bathroom outside, reward him or her with pets, cuddles, and treats.

6. Join an Obedience Class
