Hey everyone :)

I'm just looking for a bit of advice, to put my mind at rest (hopefully!!)

I got my 17 month old Bichon, Dante, neutered on Thursday 26th. Dropped him to vet in the morning, phoned the vet at 3.30 and he said everything went great, so, picked him up. Hubby picked him up and was told that he had ripped out his stitches, he wasn't going to re-suture and to leave the dog to clean the area. Hubby asked about keeping him away from our female, vet said leave other dog clean area too. Now, Dante is the BIGGEST drama queen in the world (this guy screeched when vet poured flea treatment on him, so he is prone to dramatics) Still, he seems to be in an awful amount of pain, so we brought him to the vet yesterday where he was given two injections to ease pain. No difference, the vet said he was healing nicely, but the cut seems very open and I noticed a smaller cut which he had done to himself. Do you think I would be better off going to a different vet? I asked for a cone yesterday and he said no, dog will be fine.

Could I post a picture of area?

Any opinions/advice??

I had my german shepherd neutered a couple of years ago. When I went to pick him up, the vet said male dogs rarely pull out their stitches so didn't need a collar. Went home. Following morning he had nipped the stitches out. Back to the vet and had to get restitched. This time obviously insisted on the collar. It looked horribly raw and sore so I didn't feel happy not having it done.

I'm not happy with it at all.. I've been searching the net all day and I've read the stitches need to be in for at least 5 days, I tried putting a facecloth soaked in warm water on the are (supposed to soothe) but it only seemed to irritate him more. Seeing as it's been healing for 4days now I don't think he'll re-suture. I'm going to get a cone in petmania and try and get some of the silver spray. Anyone know the name of it??

The silver spray is called aluspray.

If the dog is still in pain I'd ring the vet back and explain that, were ye given any painkillers or antibiotics when your husband picked the dog up? Leaving the 2 dogs to 'clean the area' doesn't really sound right and I can't really understand why a vet would tell ye to do that, the wound should be clean anyways and all the dogs are doing by licking at it is slowing down healing and possibly re-opening the wound.

We weren't given any painkillers or antibiotics, just basically told to leave him be. He has been way worse this morning, I called the vet and he said he'd give him another injection. Asked him for a cone again and he again said no need. He said the Bichon was over reacting and that's just the way they are. I'll be picking up a cone today and will hopefully be able to get that silver spray stuff that's supposed to help. I'm going to bring him to a different vet as well, I might be over reacting but he is in obvious pain and I can't let it go on!

I'm sorry to hear about your predicament. Frankly, it sounds like your current vet is a complete plonker.

Vote with your feet and seek out another one in your area. Perhaps if you let us know your geographical location someone here might be able to recommend a suitable vet!

From my experience bichons do tend to be a little over dramatic but that is no excuse, you know your dog better than anyone and if you think he is in pain then they should listen to you. If your willing to pay for a cone I can't understand why they won't just give you one. Confused
I know some vets don't give them out as standard to every patient, but they usually can recognize when it is necessary for one and given that he had already pulled out stitches before he had even left the vets I would have thought they'd cop on then that he needed a cone. I know one vet that swears he has only ever used a cone twice and blames poor suturing (stitches being tied too tight causing irritation) on wound mutilation.

Edited to add: If your in the north west I can recommend a few vets in the donegal/sligo/mayo region that I would recommend.

Right Update;

I brought Dante to a different Vet today, he said that the area was incredibly swollen and an infection had begun. He gave me 5 days worth of antibiotics and 5 days worth of painkillers. I had been putting a facecloth soaked in warm water on the area and he told me to keep that up.

I asked him about the other vet and he basically agreed with him re: the cone. He said smaller dogs tend to go mental if they have a cone on. He didn't seem happy with the original sutures, he said the other vet probably used the wrong kind, like, they should have been finer.

Well, he seems a little better after his injections and we'll be starting him on his tablets tomorrow. Thanks for all your advice guys!!

Oh and our Daisy is pregnant at the moment, we will def be going to the vet we saw today. I would hate to have to have any of this stress when it comes to Daisy and her puppies!!!

Poor doggie, hope he's not in pain anymore.  I got my GR done just before Christmas, he started licking at the stitches the next day.  He'd stop every time I looked at him but it started getting a bit red.  I went back to the vet and she gave me anti biotics and a cone.  I put the cone on him and he wouldn't even walk, just stood there shaking so I had to give up on that idea.  Thankfully he didn't go back licking (maybe the fear of the cone!) and it cleared up in a day or two.

Good luck with your puppies, you're going to have your hands full.

That is absolutely disgusting. Never go near that vet again letting an animal suffer like that is disgraceful. I am horrified. :( poor dog. The spary is brilliant we had to use if on our bunnny when two attacked each other. his wound was open for over a month he had antibiotics applied into the wound for the month as well he recovered beautifully and is the friendliest. I will never forget that ordeal ever.
The morning howl is driving me mad!
