Due to campaigning by Dogs Unleashed, Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown County Council (DLRCC) has amended Section 11: Animals of the current Beach Bye-Laws, which say that dogs must be on a leash AT ALL TIMES. (Also got a commitment to amend the Parks Bye-Laws, which say the same thing, during this year.) The draft amendments are now out to public consultation and offer dog owners and walkers little or nothing, Your dog must still be on a leash on all beaches during the day and is banned all year round from entering, even on a leash, Sandycove and Seapoint beaches, and the designated bathing area of Killiney Beach from May-Sept. The only concession given is that people may walk their dogs off leash before 10am and after 7pm during October to April - i.e. get up early or walk in the dark! Dogs Unleashed have organised a PUBLIC MEETING to discuss these matters on this SUNDAY, 22nd January, in Fitzpatrick's Castle Hotel, Killiney, starting at 3pm sharp. Pete Wedderburn will discuss veterinary aspects of health and welfare; Jim Stephens will talk about behavioural issues; David McWilliams as local resident and dog owner will chair the Q&A session, with DLR Councillors present. So if you're outraged by these so-called amendments, please come along and bring your friends! Draft Beach Bye-Laws can be viewed on http://www.dlrcoco.ieewss/latestnews/title,7509,en. - http://www.dlrcoco.ie/newsevents/latestnews/title,7509,en.html. Please write in before noon, 20th February and register your objections. See http://www.dogs-unleashed.org - www.dogs-unleashed.org for full details of campaign.
