5 Pug Personality Traits To Be Aware Of Before Getting One

  • 06/03/2013

Every dog is unique in the way that they act, but certain breeds do tend to have certain characteristics that are associated with them and just appear to be part of who they are. What follows are five pug personality traits that are very common within this breed and it does pay you to know about them prior to owning one as this will let you see what you are letting yourself in for.

1. They Show Extreme Loyalty

A pug is always going to be at your side as long as you are nice to them and show them love. The chances are that your pug is going to follow you wherever you go as they love to be in your line of vision and to let you know that they are there, so prepare to trip over them from time to time when you suddenly discover that your pug is actually beneath your feet.

2. You Cannot Leave Them Along For Prolonged Spells

A pug is going to hate it if you leave them alone in your house for a long time as they need to know that somebody is there. They can handle you going to the shops, but never leave them for hours or they are going to whimper and howl all the time, so if you are going to be at work all day, then this may not be the dog for you.

3. They Are Fantastic With Children

It is entirely safe to have a pug around your child as they are fantastic with kids and indeed they will play very well with them. You do not have to worry about them biting them or anything like that and they will also never really lose their temper, so your child can do pretty much what they want and there will be no bad reaction from your pug.

4. They Are Natural Barkers

A pug will tend to bark quite a lot and it is important that you work with them so they can be taught when it is fine to bark and when they should be quiet. Quite often they will do this just to make sure that you know they are there and it does normally link in with the companionship and loyalty idea mentioned earlier and indeed if they think that either you or they are in danger, then they will bark until that danger has passed, so they feel they are protecting you and looking after you like any loyal pug should.

5. They Can Be Stubborn At Times

A pug is known to be quite a stubborn dog, but all this means is that you need to be consistent in what you say to them when it comes to commands or training them to stop certain types of behavior. They have a tendency to stick to their guns until they really do believe that what you are doing is the correct thing, but be patient and you will get your rewards.

So those are just five pug personality traits that are common with the breed and the hope is that by knowing about them in advance you will then feel that a pug really is a fantastic dog for you to have. There is no doubt that they are a loving breed and will bring you a lot of joy over the years, but they will still have their own character that marks them out as being a typical pug.
