All About The Havanese Dog Breed

  • 13/03/2015

If you're looking for a sunny disposition and a fun devoted companion, look no further. The Havanese is an ideal buddy to have on your side. With his long silky hair and his open loving eyes this cuddle sized dog is ideal.

Dating back to Cuba's aristocracy in the 1800s, he quickly has earned his nickname of "velcro". He loves to stay close to his owner. Easily trainable and very energetic, he excels in sports and canine careers that range from handicap assistant to circus performer.

He is very affectionate and loves on everyone strangers and children included. He gets along well with other dogs and even with cats but he always puts his family first when it comes to sharing his love.

Given the opportunity, this cuddly one will stay right by his owner. He does not like to be alone and if left along for long periods of time he will quickly become anxious. Don't leave this guy at home alone and don't leave him in the yard for any extended period of time. He is a people person and must be kept happy.

Originally bread for wealthy Cuban families to keep them company he has quickly proven his worth. He works well as a therapy pet and can sniff out mold as well as termites.

He loves to do clownish antics and works well as a performer for the circus as well as children's theater and as a companion for a sick child. He packs a lot of energy into his compact size.

Avoid teaching this guy bad tricks such as begging for people food and allowing him to sit at the table while eating.

Be ware, he may be training you instead of you training him. He is a smart pet and may well find ways to "train" you to give him what he wants. He loves to please you and if you show him affection and affirmation he will be delighted.

Ideal for a family of any size he will choose his own 'owner' but show allegiance to the entire family. Full of love and energy he is a great pet for any age.

Be vigilant about picking up after him so he won't eat his own stools. Most of them do this as puppies but a select few will continue this disgusting habit well into adulthood.

His luscious coat will require some brushing so you'll want to take a few minutes each and every day to brush him out or take him to a groomer frequently.

Ideal for apartments, houses and large yards just be aware that if he doesn't know someone and sees them passing by either from an inside window or a yard, he will bark in greeting. He is also likely to bark at strange noises. He does not generally bark to hear himself bark however.
